Just swapped out engine in 2000 dakota 3.9L. Now it will only start every once in a while and when it does start, when i put it in gear it dies. put in new plugs new wires dis. cap and rotor button. seemed to make it worse. hopefully someone can give me an idea of what to check. thanks

Make sure the timing is correct, as well as go through the ignition system and make sure everything is hooked up, working properly, etc.

Note that distributor position determines
fuel injector timing .
If you moved it when swapping , which you probably did , try moving Just a Little in
either direction , then try start and rev up .
You can find the " best spot "
I have heard about a method to { index it }
didn't work ..
Only other way is take to a dEaLeR or
other Fully qualified shop..
Spark timing comes from a sensor in the bell housing , behind and down alittle on pass side from dist.

OK I FINALLY GOT IT TO START EVERY TIME. AND IT RUNS GOOD BUT NOW WHEN I PUT IT INTO REVERSE IT WILL RUN FOR ABOUT 10 SECONDS AND THEN IT WILL DIE. DRIVE IS FINE THOUGH.
