After my truck sits all day at work, and I first turn on the air,it smells a little like mildew for about 5 seconds then goes away.
I bought the truck new and nothing has ever been spilled in there. The only thing different I have done is buy one of those reflective dash protecters that sits against the front window, and keeps the sun out.
Any ideas?

Mine does that too!

I just don't turn the air on anymore. :0)

It's done it since the day I got it, I think it's something to do with the filtration system. It's not mildew, but... *shrug*

There are some posts from our friends over at Edmunds Town Hall re: this issue....it is not uncommon.

I've seen posts related to how the truck is parked after the A/C has been run and the A/C drain lines not being able to drain the water from moisture/condensation build up, properly.

Someone also mentioned that there is a product on the market for dis-infecting the mildew, seems the design of the A/C system is indeed a breeding ground for mildew.

Some also say to park your truck in direct sunlight for about 30 minutes, then turn it on, open all the windows, and run the heat on high for a couple of minutes to dry the whole ventilation system out.

Others report no problem what so ever, as they always park on level ground after their A/C has been running, and this seems to help in draining all the moisture/condensation out.

I haven't noticed the problem on mine after 1700 miles (I have always parked on level ground FWIW)

My only complaint on the system is that it's weak...poor airflow for the A/C, must always be at least in the 2nd position for the fan. Closing the vents on the pax side helps somewhat.

Yeah, I thought the A/C would work a little better too. Our '99 Interpid will freeze you out. Gotta really blast the Dak to cool it off.

I have also noticed this. Our other Daks are 2000 models and they will freeze you out but my 2001 is not quite as cold. Does it have anything to do with the interior change?

Yes, service mgrs have said the redesign of the dash layout and especially the vents, has something to do with a decrease in A/C performance for the 2001 models. Wonder if we'll be freezing in the winter, hopefuly with no stinky smell!

If you ask me, you 2000 4.7 owners should be happy...more HP, badges, hood/console lights, and numbers on your gauges (lines, we have stinking lines), and it appears, a better working A/C system.

Wonder what the 2002 owners will wish for that the 2001 models have?

Yea, my A/C smells to for the first couple of seconds, just drive with the windows down till it goes away. Tried spryaing some Lysol in the return vents with the A/C running. That helped a little bit. My friend once owned a used 91 Hyndai excel and when you turned the heat on it smelled like maple syrup! Go figure

The maple syrup smell while the heat is on is common. That smell is the first sign of an antifreeze leak. You get the same smell when your car overheats.

FWIW, our 1998 Voyager with about 34K miles, has never had a mildewy, smelly A/C. It also 'blows' away the performance of my 2001 DAK QC's A/C

Man, I hate that everybodies A/C is givin fits. I can't get over how quick the truck is blowin cold air. It gets really cold, really fast. I will say this though, after I shut the truck down, I've got about 5 gallons of condensation on the ground. I've never seen anything like it. I imagine if your trucks arent' gettin rid of all that water, a nasty little mildew smell is bound to occur. I hope thier is a quick/easy remedy for you all!!
but man, i'm glad mine works so well... :)

Has anyone tried the DEI cool wrap referenced in the following post to improve A/C capability?
