Subject: Tranny Cooler...Do I really need it?
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 99 Dak 5.2L extended cab. It did not come with the heavy duty service package. I have added a class IV hitch and will be pulling a boat soon. I was just wondering if I "really" needed to have the tranny cooler also?

Thanks

Depends. If it's a small boat, you NEVER tow in OD, drive slow, and keep it to relativly short distances at relativly moderate air temps, it will be fine.

If it were my truck, I'd add one.

Add the tranny cooler, your truck and transmission will thank you. If the boat is a light aluminum boat you mignt not have to worry about the cooler, but if the boat has significant weight add the cooler. I added one to my 2000 4.7 auto trans since I pull a 3000# boat through hills and mountains in the desert, never had a problem with the tranny getting hot.

With the tranny OD off the tranny acts totally different on my 4.7. You can realy get into the pedal before it down shifts, with the trans in OD it constantly downshifts with moderate to light accelleration. With OD off it tows real nice, with OD on it's constanlty hunting through the gears.

I would go with a tranny cooler unless your pulling a little canoe or jonboat. LOL. Im even thinking about ditching the factory HD cooler for a better aftermarket one. They arent that expensive and everyone knows Dodge/chrysler transmissions are not the best. I normally tow with my 5.9L with OD on unless its hilly or stop'n'go driving.

Get the cooler. It's very CHEAP insurance.

I have a pre-used tranny cooler from a dodge caravan I was thinking about transplanting. If memory serves me right it's a 4 pass cooler. It was an aftermarket install my dad did when he was pulling an ultra light camper. Are all coolers the same size (hose connection wise)? All I would need then is an install kit. Right?
