Got 1500 miles on my new Dak and today the steering wheel started rubbing when I turn it. I can hear it rubbing so it must be something right behind the wheel, and I can feel the vibration in my hands when it rubs. Anyone else have this problem? Any idea what it could be?

I have a 1998 Dakota and have owned it for about 7 months. I have the same exact "feeling" your talking about in the wheel and have since the day I bought it. I have not yet had the time to tear the column apart to find the problem though, sorry. I do know that my intermediate shaft...The piece of metal in the column between the firewall and steering box......has some play in it. I reach through the drivers side wheelwell and grab it and I can feel some play in it. I'm not sure if this might have something to do with the rubbing feel in the wheel or not.

Got the same thing, 04Quad 4x4V8 with about 11K. Ive told various friends about it who probably know a hell of alot more than most Dodge techs, and they say it probably isn't much to worry about. Somehow I get the feeling maybe 15-20 years down the road when this truck has breathed its last breath and gets parted out when they go to open up the front end they'll find that it was built out of matches and popsicle sticks.

2200 miles, and still got the steering wheel noise. I've learned a few things about it: it doesn't start until 20-30 minutes of driving, you can only hear/feel it when you turn the wheel very very slowly just a few inches either way, and after the truck has been parked a couple of hours, the noise is gone. In colder weather, it barely happens. It sounds like it's a rubber seal rubbing up against plastic right inside where the steering wheel meets the steering column. I don't think it's too serious, but it can be annoying. If it's still there, I'm going to have Dodge look at it when I bring the truck in for my 3000 mile service. With my luck though, when I bring it in, it won't be making the noise.

I got almost exactly the same thing. Good luck. My dealer couldnt diagnose rotors warped so bad that the whole wheel vibrated visibly when seen from the passenger seat when braking.

In fact let me know if you have any luck. IF yours figures it out, tell me so I can walk right in and do their job for them again by telling them exactly what to do to fix it.

I'm going to get it fixed next week (I hope). The rubbing sound/feeling is coming from the steering intermediate shaft rubbing against the rubber grommet in the toe plate where the shaft passes through the firewall. The dealer is going to replace the whole shaft. I also have a popping sound in the steering column now, and a clunk in the steering coming from right under my feet. The steering in this truck sucks. And just today, I got my "Welcome to the Dodge Experience" package from Chrysler in the mail. So far, after 3000 miles, my Dodge Experience has consisted of trying to rearrange my schedule every week and bum rides off of people because my truck is always in for service.

I seem to remember seeing something about a clockspring recall... might make the airbag not deploy in an accident. Have it looked at and/or see if the clockspring recall applies to your truck.
