Subject: Fix for 5.9L cracked head
IP: Logged

Message:
Hello,

Does anybody know of a fix for cracking heads on 5.9L magnum engines?
My father has a 99 pickup and has cracked a head for the third time. This last time the head had less than 3000 miles on it and needless to say the truck must go if nothing can be done about.

The R/T heads are stronger than the OEM. Keep in mind the R/T heads are a type of head, not what it came out of.

2000 CC R/T 52mm TB, M1, 2.02 R/T heads (polished chambers), headers 3.5" exhaust, flowmaster 40 single, MP PCM, removed engine driven fan(It's back on now Damnit), MSD ign-BTM, Taylor "409" plug wires with boots, Keith Black pistons, 5140 rods, ARP head studs, Hotchkis suspension 2/3 drop, Transgo shift kit, lot's of little stuff! More to come!

Pull the cracked head, clean the block.
Lay a straight edge along the block's surface from front to back check flatness with a feeler gage. you should NOT be able to slip a .004" gage under the straight edge. do this again but angle the straight edge at a slight diagonal (front end at intake side of block, back end at the exhaust side) the the opposite diagonal.
If the .004" gage slips underneath the straight edge you must machine the block's deck surface.

Also be sure to invest in quality fasteners such as ARP. Use the recommended torque applied in sequence and in steps.
