Hey all, I'm new to the boards and have a question. I've got an 89 dakota, 2wd, 3.9 and auto. I was wondering what rear axle it would have, and how I could find out what ratio. Also, I am looking for a locker of some sort, maybe a powertrax. Are they any compaines that make one? my last question is, that I recently ran it down the 1/4 mile, but it only ran 19.02, with me manually shifting the gears. It needs a tune-up (plugs, wires, cap, rotor) but other than that, why would it be so slow???

help please!

Call the dealer's parts department or service and give them you
VIN. They always tell me stuff about my truck when I do that.

Look on the underside of the hood for a white label that lists all the options...it may be missing though after all these years

Crawl under the truck and look at the rear diff cover. One of the bolts holding the rear diff cover on should have a metal tag under it. It will be stamped with a number like 3.55 or 3.92. That's your rear end gear ratio.

Many people will tell you that their trucks don't have this tag. Between my dad and myself we have owned 13 dodge trucks since 1980 and all 13 of them have this tag on the rear differential cover.

It's probably an 8 1/4. Is the cover round or an octagon? If it's round, it's an 8 1/4. If it's an octagon, it's a 7 1/4. Can you take a pic? If so, e-mail it to me and I can tell you for certain.

offroadin2wd,
Just count the bolts holding the cover on. If it has 12 bolts it's a 9-1/4". If it has 10 bolts it's an 8-1/4". If it has 9 bolts it's a 7-1/4 (no Dakotas have the 7-1/4).

I can't imagine the tag with the gear ratio not being there. I don't know how many times I've been told the tag wasn't there and when I crawl under there I find the tag. It is painted the same color as the rear end and it is barely bigger than the bolt that holds it on. It's usually under one of the bottom bolts.

If you don't have a tag it's still very easy to determine which rear gear you have.....

Jack the rear end off the ground. Put the truck in neutral. Put a chalk mark on the tire close to the floor. Put a chalk mark on the drive shaft where you can see it. Now, slowly spin the rear tire one full (exact, not more, not less)revolution. Count the number of times the drive shaft spun. The mark on the drive shaft will have come around 3 complete times. It will stop somewhere between 3 and 4 turns. If it almost makes it to 4 full turns then it's a 3.92. If the mark on the drive shaft stops almost dead in the middle between 3 and 4 then you have 3.55's (most likely). If the mark on the drive shaft barely makes it past the 3rd revolution then you have 3.23's (very unlikely).

Gen I and Gen II Dakotas did get the 7 1/4 axle. I believe it was only in 4 cylinder applications but I might be incorrect on that.

All trucks came with that tag from the factory but 90% of them get thrown away when the rear-end oil is changed for the first time.

I took my tag off when I put my SS cover on, so, when I sell the truck, the next owner can come on here and ask a simple question, only to have Wip imply that he's either an idiot or a liar. :oP

Also ... good call on the 'experimental method' for determining gear ratio. Easier than calling the dealer ... you know ... those guys where they sell cars that could screw up a wet dream.
