Subject: Removing spark plugs???
IP: Logged

Message:
I was able to replace 5 out of six plugs on my Dakota, and the 6th one just won't budge. I don't want to force it to the point I snap something off and have a major repair bill. I guess I can just leave that plug alone for the life of the truck, but I would really like to get it out...any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

WD-40 or some other penetrating oil should do it.

Yes... penetrating oil... be sure to give it time to work... let engine cool, put some penetrating oil around the hole and let it sit a couple hours... then go back and put some more. Let sit couple hours, then try to remove the plug with firm constant pressure... but not enough to break it...
If it still will not budge give it some more penetrating oil and a few whacks... be careful:
The whacks are to set up some vibes to help the oil penetrate... Put a socket on the plug (and an extension if need be) and whack straight down with about the same amount of force you'd need to put a small nail into sheetrock... The socket will transmit the vibes into the plug and block. Be sure to hit it STRAIGHT DOWN because if its at at angle, it might break the plug. Do this for a minute or two, put some more oil on and let it sit overnight. Should come loose the next morning. Oh, and obviously, do not start the engine or it will burn off the oil and you'll have to start all over again. Good Luck!

Contrary to popular belief, WD-40 is not a penetrating oil.

Use PB Blaster. Take a length of coathanger wire, and place one end on the top of the plug where it meets the head. Spray PB Blaster on the wire. It will runm down and end up exactly where you need it without a lot of mess. You don't need much. Then do what plarkinjr says.

Try removing the plugs with the engine hot.

WS-1500 not a good idea on an aluminum head, a really great way to remove the threads from the head on those type engines. we have had more then a few idiots bring their heads to use to put hi stregnth (not heli-coils, won't seal right against combustion pressure) thread inserts in after they did that.

heat causes metal to expand, you want it cold where it contracts the metal

I own a machine shop and have been machining for over 40 years, the aluminum threads in aluminum block heads, after they have been ran for while, corrode just a bit. When the corrosion is hot it sticks to the threads of the spark plug, then some ham handed idiot will get in there with a air wrench or a breaker bar , and the first thing that lets go is the aluminum threads, then the plug is worse then cross threaded and won't come out. Then I charge $225 bucks for about an hour's work and a 5 dollar insert, then lecture the hell out of you before giving it back. My normal shop rate is $75 an hour and that is for my industrial customers. Funny thing, I have never removed the mess from an aluminum head from some one's engine that let it sit over night before starting to work on it.
