Subject: Diff. still grinding. HELP!
IP: Logged

Message:
I recently changed the oil in the rear differential of my 1999 dakota 4x4, which was making a rough grinding noise when you were on a incline and making a turn. I used amsoil 75-90 lube and even added 3oz of amsoil friction additive. I then took the truck out and did about 8 figure 8s. I thought my problem was solved but next time I got the oil hot and on a incline the grinding was back again, maybe not quiet as bad as it was but still very noticeable.Has anyone else had this problem and what did you do?

You know what, you should get it to a gear shop instead of waiting for input here before you no longer have a driveable truck.

I bought this truck about 3months ago and it had 70k on it. I figured with this grinding noise that the diff. would be full of debris but when I removed the cover the oil was black but no residue in the pumpkin. I've read some threads were people were told that this noise was acceptable due to the limited slip diff. I'm not questioning anyones opinon because this acually is my first 4x4 in my 30 years of buying trucks. What puzzles me is that it drives fine until the diff. oil warms up.

when the oil warms up so does the metal in the differential, any one that ever worked in a machine shop can tell you that when metal warms up it changes dimensionally. That means holes get smaller and all else gets bigger. Sounds to me that once something back there gets warmed up it starts to rub on something that either grows or shrinks or a combination, just a bit too much.

I changed my oem oil at 10,000 miles with AMSOIL 75w-90 on my 2003 RAM 2500 and it grinds on turns also. With OEM fluid it did not happen. I thought this AMSOIL stuff was suppose to be great? I should have left the factory fluid in it. The 10.5" American Axles don't use clutch packs so no friction modifier is required. What could be problem?
