Subject: HS 1.7 install probs/rough idle/noise

Message:
Well, last week, I put in my HS 1.7 rockers. They are the auto-adjust models, no tweaking needed other than a torque wrench. Well, a couple days after doing the install, I started hearing noise. Specifically, valve train nosie. So went straight home. Only a few miles, and I drove as slow as possible. So I got home, pulled the covers and one of my rockers was loose. I retightened it to the torque specs and checked all the rest to make sure they were alright. So I get it going again, and I now have a clicking sound that is harmonic with the engine and is definatly coming from the passenger side (the side w/ the loose rocker). Also, my idle is rough and the truck shakes a little. Its still drivable without any huge effects and performance is good.

I'm thinking that during the drive home after the rocker loosened, I may have bent a rod. Does this sound right? I really need help with this, and I'd really like to avoid paying someone else to do something simple. Sorry for the long post. I really appreciate any help possible.

Thanks

At the risk of stating the obvious...pull the push rods one at a time and check for straightness.
Might try idling it with the rocker cover off (cover the rest of the engine and exhaust with towels to catch oil)so you can narrow it down.
Or, get a auto type stethoscope to narrow it down.

Well, of course I was planning on doing that. But is there any other things i should look for? I doubt the lifters would be damaged... would they? Im guessing the only way to know that is to pull the intake manifold. Also, does discount Auto stock pushrods, in case that is the problem?

Thanks again, I really appreciate it.

How do they auto-adjust ? I installed Crower's on mine and had to set each cylinder on TDC, if your cam was in the valve open posistion wouldn't the rocker be loose when the valve closed ?

The H.S. Rockers are set to the original factor clearances of the original stamped steel rockers. What he meant by auto adjust is the hydraulic lifters filling in the gap (lifter preload). I rather set the lifter preload myself.
