 Subject: Shift Indicator

I have a '93 Dakota and the shift indicator was really iffy for a while not lining up right. It finally decided to stop below 1st and stay there. Wasn't a big deal until I went to get the emmissions done. They don't test them if the shift indicator is faulty. Can anyone tell me how I can fix this?
