Alright,
My turn. As for COPS making money on tickets..yep they do. Know where that money goes, better equipment. Racial profialing, yep happens also. Mostly because of racism, also it isn't that offten that a 17-19 year old drives a brand new truck or maybee you were driving the "new" truck a little to aggressivly. COPS have to look at the situation and make a decission, sometimes they make the right one, sometimes they make the wrong one and sometimes they make the one the pisses you off. If you know your tail light is out and you drive you are knowingly breaking the law, yep you should have to be at least remined of the law. The same applies for speeding. Now if you think I am wrong or stupid, thats fine, not a problem won't even offend me, why...I get called worse everytime I go into a house to stop a domestic assault, or when I give some people tickets.

Perhaps if our law enforcement divisions were transferred to the private sector, more streamlined, efficient, and competitive departments would arise from the mess we currently have to protect and to serve. It's not about having to make a decision, it's about the officers who truly believe they have a Phd in ethics. Give me a break. It's about the guy who pulled me over the day I bought my used Jeep which happened to have larger tires, of which I did not know about and was moving with traffic. Asking me why I was doing 70 in a 60. When responding with the fact that I was under the impression I was travelling at 62 and never speed he proceeded with, "Why were you going 62?". I was about to explain the intricacies of analog speedometers and to tell him to go do something to himself but he immediately returned to his car to write me a speeding ticket without an inclination to listen to my response which may have undoubtedly helped him in his decision making. A ticket to which the judge and my insurance agent could only laugh. I can give you all many more instances in many arenas that I've learned of where our 'protectors' have decided to use their Phd's to become judge and jury. The system is phenomenal, one worthy of a free box of donuts. Reminds me of customer service departments.
I realize there is a possibility you are one of many great officers who can truly say they protect and serve the public to the best of their ability. Don't mean to sound rude but sorry chief, sometimes doesn't seem like there are a whole lot of you.

My 24 cents :)
Take care and be safe out there.

My dad is retired State Police. He said he HATED writing speeding tickets and almost never pulled anyone over unless they were doing 20 over. As far as getting pulled over for doing 2 mph over... it is still speeding. But you can prob get out of it in court by saying some crap about speedos not being accurate.

My dad mostly worked wrecks. You wouldn't believe some of the pictures I have seen from wrecks. It really makes you think.

I agree that most cops are pricks, but that is their job... hopefully, they do their job for you one day and stop that f&@king drunk for DWI before he smashes into your family and kills/paralizes everyone in it!

Kraw,
Your dad sounds like a pretty cool guy. As far as 2 mph over still being considered speeding, I think that's a bit belligerent. However, after comparing tire sizes proceeding the event I can understand the guy pulling me over for doing 10 over even if I was moving with traffic and was unfortunately unaware. The problem I had was when he refused to listen. It's all about making decisions just as 94dak said, but making a decision means acquiring the information pertinent to the situation. It wouldn't have taken too long to hear me but what do I know, I'm a young, 24 year old, software developer who owns a condo, quad cab, and a lifted jeep. I fit the profile of a law-breaker, don't I? My only problem is how some of our helpers in blue handle some of the situations. Hell, maybe he was just having a bad day.:-) I can only laugh about it and hope I'm not in a similar situation in the future.
As for the pleasant image of a paralyzed family, thank you for that. I don't feel that too many cadets enroll in the police academy with charitable intentions of protecting others' families. Of course, some may. We're all a part of an intricate circle of humanity where you are needed as much as the next guy to keep our world turning. That includes but does not rely solely on, police officers as well.
Thank you for your response, Kraw.

Jeff

Oh, and by the way I didn't start this string with its original subject header. Traffic Pigs seems pretty crass and unwarranted. I just started by responding to 94dak.

Just an FYI :)

Jeff, you are right there are bad COPS out there, and here is the real problem... When was the last time you all were speeding down the road and saw a cop parked on the side. Now how many of you thought that the cop wasn't paying attention? He might not have been OR he could have been one of the better COPS and realised that there was little danger in you speeding. True story, I pulled a black female over for doing double the speed limit (30 in a 15 housing area). I approched the vehicle intending to give a warning, not because she was female or black but because everyone makes mistakes, the first thing she said was "hurry up I'm late". I spent the next five minutes trying to explain that kids can pop out of everywhere, she refused to listen for more than 30 sec. I then issued a ticket for excessive. Aprox 30 min later I got called back to the station because the lady informed the desk sergant that i had been racist and gave her the ticket because she was femal and black. all she wanted was to get out of the ticket. Two days latter I responded to a call about cars driving to fast, guess who made the complaint, yep the same lady. Guess what else...her tune was completely different, now she was saying that there was no excuse for speeding. COPS deal with this every day, and yes we start to expect the worst from everyone. It is not right, however when everybody has an excuse they all start to sound like what they are, BS. Don't get me wrong one bad cop can piss off about 35 different people in one shift. Just try to remember that COPS are human and despite any training they will still act like humans. Everyone drive safely.

P.S. To any and all who have been shortchanged by COPS I am sorry we are here to Assist, Protect and Defend, sometimes we get a little confused as to what we are here to do.

Hey 94Dak...

When I wrote about the "racial profiling" in my previous post I just wanted to mention that it does in fact happen.

Yeah, people are gonna play the "race card" here and there, but as a Black man and a "good citizen" I have seen it in action personally.

Typically, I am a good driver. I have never had a speeding ticket (thank goodness) and I am mostly respectful of the law. However, that doesn't change anything when I see 5.0 in my rear view mirror lookin' at their computer screens trying to pull up my license plates.

Now granted, my car is "hooked up" a little (with a body kit and rims.. My Dak is nearly stock) however I also have my Fraternity plates and emblems (which signify that I am "college educated"). I don't carry myself in a "ghetto" manner and I refuse to act stupid especially in front of a COP who can pass judgement on me right there on the spot.

As a minority, I sometimes feel that I am in a precarious situation when dealing with police. Now granted, I have not done anything wrong, therefore I generally don't fear them, however I ain't stupid/naive either. It could be one of those "bad days" or "bad cops" who is just lookin' for something.

Now, I have talked to several Black cops about this and they know that it goes on, however they say that there is a "system" within the system as well, therefore they can't do much about it either if they don't witness it for themselves.

All I am saying is... police/citizen relations could be alot better if treatment was equal across the board, but as you may know (and stated) there is gonna be some bias anyways due to racism.

Personally, I just pay attention to what I am doing and try to stay out of situations that could lead to bad things. I know that if a situation would arise where I would need a cop, then I would still call them (since that is part of their job), however in traffic, I pay very close attention to what is going on around me and who is watching... cause you just never know if "one of the boys in blue" is comin' for you.

I agree with both sides on this one. Cops can be a little forcefull, and quick to write tickets sometimes, but ive met a few good ones. One helped me reduce a careless and reckless and another gave me instructions on how to do better doughnuts with a 5 spd(couldnt always do 'em that good!) and he showed me some good 4 wheelin trails. This was just some random cop who thought that i was a nice kid. On the other hand, ive seen crown vics get airborne comming after me, just b/c of a headlight or something. The fact is we need them no matter how much we disslike them. Can you believe that with no police, some people would be more likely to commit crimes? HA! Im still a teen, and although i dont like the way they controll my driving habbits, I still respect any police officer, or any emergency personel. One day it will probobaly be me with the badge and i hope for the same respect that i gave officers.
Kindess goes a long way.
