Hello Everyone,
I own a 99 Dodge dokata sport 5.9L reg. cab short bed.
I live in IL. I'm going to move to CA. I'm towing a 6 by 12 foot trailer. With a clas 3 hitch. the total wieght with trailer will be 4300 pounds. I will be driving 2055 miles. I was woundering if you think my truck will do fine in the rockys. Is this a good idea or no? Do you think i'll make it up the rockys? Please respound.

If you have an auto, make sure you have a tranny cooler, I pulled the same size trailer from WI to MO about a month ago, and averaged about 65 mph and when I stopped for gas or when the kids saw the rest area sign, the cooler made a big difference, I was able to touch and hold the cooler itself. They make a big difference on the auto's.

Thats a long move. I only moved 4 miles and that was a real pain I can't imagine going that far...

I don't have a definite answer but I can tell you my experiences with towing. I have a 99 with the 5.2L 4x4 and the towing package. I tow my boat and trailer (3900lbs) with the bed of the pickup full of wood and coolers and other gear (300-500 lbs) over the passes here in Washington, Oregon with no trouble. I have done it on fairly warm (90 degree) days and haven't overheated anything on a 400 mile trip. I don't think you have a 4x4 because I don't think they offered the 5.9L with that option in 99 (at least when I bought mine) so you should be even better off with the bigger motor and no transfer case. Just remember to take off the overdrive if you have an automatic and watch your temps and I would think you will be fine. Oh....and bring lots of gas money.

Just to re state a little tid bit from a Dodge Mechanic. Swap the rear end oil to a synthetic. He says it will keep your gears from grinding away as fast. He told me he been working hard on the Dak rears because of a lot of jet ski pullers in Florida.

No the rear end fluid swap is simple if its anything like the one in my 93 4x4 w/318. The best thing to do is pick up a Chiltons if they have one for you truck. I hang out in Roseville alot on the weekends, but with that R/T you will seriously have to watch ot for the Roseville Police since they seem to be everywhere and will bust ya for doing 5 or so over the limit. Maybe you and I can race or something if your up to it. Be warned though, I got a mean stock 93 4x4 with a 5.2 and a sloppy auto tranny with practically bald tires that I am pretty sure wont die on me while we are waiting for the light to turn green. Since you have the 5.9, I will be forced to put in some of my "secret weapon" (aka fuel injector cleaner) and you can barely tell it has almost 107,000 miles on it, so look out. LOL!
