Subject: Second thoughts?
IP: Logged

Message:
I've ordered a new '04 Dak CC loaded with the Stampede package and now I'm having second thoughts. I left my S-10 4x4 w/4.3l V-6 at the dealers and it sold 2 days later. I was all fired up to get the Dak with the 4.7l V8......until I found this site and started reading about the problems with the 4.7 engines and trannies. WTF, have I made a mistake I'll regret for years to come? My S10 only had 37,000 miles on it but I never had a single problem out of it. I looked at the new Colorado's but just didn't find them appealing...looks cheap and I want a V8. Please tell me the problems I'm reading here are not common with all Daks and as long as I regularly service mine I shouldn't have a problem. Sorry for the long post but damn $27,500 is alot of money to put out for a truck with a flawed engine and tranny.

I've got a 2003 Stampede CC with the 4.7 and I'm happy. No problems so far, but every manufacturer has problems. I've had worse luck with GM than I've ever had with Dodge. If I do have problems, then I'll deal. I don't mind gettin' my hands dirty.

Don't get too depressed about your purchase. You usually only see negative posts on sites like these about our trucks. These forums usually don't represent the people that are happy with their trucks. I've got a 99 and only had a couple sensors and a cat go bad on it. I think my Dakota is the best automotive purchase I ever made.

your going to be fine, nice truck, v-8, and your extended warranty if there is a problem. i believe
most of the transmission troubles were with the older dak's (pre-2000)

I'm curious. Just how much was the Stampede option? I thought I might add it to my '00 R/T so I went to the parts department and asked how much the pieces were. He wrote down $405.00 for ONE piece for the rocker panel (it takes 4 per side). He asked if he should go on and I told him never mind. With the wider tires, the front of the rear flares look like they've been sand blasted. I don't want to screw up the looks of the truck with mud guards. I bought some 3M paint protective film for the top of the bed where the Extang Full Tilt tonneau sits. Works great, but the flares are contoured and I'm not sure I can get a good fit. Any suggestions?

Penrod,
What you have to remember is that the people on these boards tend to be fanatics and want their vehicle to be perfect. We tend to look a little harder for defects than the general population. No matter what brand you're talking about, the forums are going to list the negatives. Every brand has it's weaknesses. It's good to be informed and know what to look out for. I have owned Ford, Chevy, Jeep trucks in the past and my '99 Dakota is the best I've ever owned. Congradulations, you just purchased an awesome truck.

Be proud of your purchase. These are fantastic trucks. This website has the most fanatical owners, by far. Dodge owners are proud. I think you made a wise purchase.

'00 4.7L w/ 50,000 miles. No probs other than the brakes which are partly my fault. I tend to experiment alot and that experiment didn't work as well.

If you are paranoid about your brakes don't be. Your '04 brakes are supposed to be awesome. If you are really paranoid about your auto tranny go to apsprecision.com. Those guys can calm your fears.

Thanks guys. I was a little worried about all the negs posted but considering all the Daks that are out there the negs posted here are really quite small. I've already planed mods for it once it gets here. 2/4 Belltech drop with Nitro Active shocks and sway bars. MBRP duals if they'll work with the Stampede package and drop. Cold air intake w/TB spacer, Fastman 68TB and a cowl induction hood. I'm not sure about the wheels yet, don't like the hassle of aluminum or chrome so I'm leaning toward the R/T's. Anywho thanks again, I'm feeling better about my Dak...now if the dealer would only call and say it's here.

Overthehill, the Stampede package is $1300 and change when ordered with the vehicle, not sure about price when ordered from dealer.

Dump the TB spacer. They are worthless. BBK 70mm TB's are on sale right now at truckperformance.com. I'm ordering one this afternoon.

Glad you feel better Penrod. You are going to be quite happy. My uncle had an S-10 and he absolutely loves my cousin's 00 Dak x-cab with the 4.7. I look forward to going home everynight so I can take the Dak home.

You'll love your dakota Penrod. I too looked at those Colorado's and Canyon's. The only thing I like is the front end. Everything else is blah to me compared to the Dakota. I have a 98 Dakota Sport with a V8 with 60,000 miles on it. Only had it in the shop once, that was for a small tranny fluid leak. I'm more than happy with my truck. You'll be happy with yours too. Enjoy it!

Found this on a web page.

Joey,
Yes they are lying!! Think about it....
If the parts can't be purchased and installed as a seperate package, then how will they repair an original Stampede that gets involved in an accident? All of the Stampede pieces can be purchased and installed on the standard Dakota. They were selling the exact same appearance package at StylinConcepts 3 years before DC desided to make it a "Stampede" option. My mouth dropped the first time I saw a Stampede. I could not believe that DC stooped so low as to stick a cheap aftermarket ground effects kit on a Dakota and make it a factory option. You would think that they would at least come out with a new design that was orignal rather than use someone else's design. Upon seeing this for the first time (last fall), I imediately went and pulled out my StylinConcepts catalog and there it was. DC took the cheapest aftermarket ground effects kit available and put it on a Dakota and called it a Stampede. You can pay 3 prices for it at the dealer or you can get it from StylinConcepts.

There is a kid that works at McDonalds, where I live, that his Dad bought this exact kit and had it put on his 1999 CC 3.9L Dakota in the Spring of 2001. Everyone thinks he has a Stampede. He had his truck customized with this "Stampede" kit 2 years before DC ever made the Stampede.

I'm just like you Penrod. I bought an '04 Dak Sport Plus 4X4 two weeks ago, then found this site which has me second guessing myself. Before I bought it, I read all the professional reviews and they were all positive. Some even said the Dakota was the best pick-up of any class, hands down. The only negs I could find were for the gas mileage, but I can deal with that. Currently, with 900 miles, I already have a problem with the front driver side tire wearing unevenly, so the front end needs an alignment. I'm hoping this isn't a bad omen of things to come.
