DODGE: BOLD, POWERFUL AND CAPABLE

The all-new 2005 Dodge Dakota takes its place at head of the class, with an all-new stronger and more durable fully-boxed frame. New front and rear suspensions deliver improved ride refinement, yet still provide a best-in-class 7,000 lbs. plus of towing capability and a gross combined weight (GCW) of 11,500 lbs.

"Dodge created the mid-size segment with the original Dakota and the new Dodge Dakota is still the only mid-size truck that hits the mark," said Darryl Jackson, Vice President, Dodge Marketing. "The Dakota lets our owners work hard and play hard by providing the largest and most powerful mid-size pickup.

"The 2005 Dakota is the next step in the all-new Dodge truck line-up," added Jackson. "As with the Dodge Ram 1500 HEMI, Dodge Ram SRT-10 and Dodge Ram Heavy Duty, the Dakota tes its segment with power and capability. Longer and wider than the mid-size competition, the new Dodge Dakota offers best-in-class overall interior space and comfort."

The all-new 2005 Dodge Dakota is 3.7 inches longer than its predecessor, primarily ahead of the front axle, to provide added crush space for improved impact performance. The new design reflects a balance between added safety features and the maneuverability of a true mid-size pickup. The bumpers are also extended slightly farther fore and aft to increase their protective capabilities in low-speed impacts. The body has been widened 2.7 inches.

CLASS TING POWER AND THE ONLY V-8s IN ITS CLASS

Now with two V-8 offerings, Dodge Dakota tes the mid-size segment in power and torque. With a powerful standard 3.7-liter Magnum V-6 rated at 210 horsepower and 235 lb.-ft. of torque, the new Dodge Dakota offers a six-percent improvement in fuel efficiency and improved power over the 3.9-liter Magnum V-6. The 4.7-liter V-8 Magnum is rated at 230 horsepower at 4,600 rpm and 290 lb.-ft. of torque at 3,600 rpm, while the new 4.7-liter High Output Magnum V-8 further eclipses the competition in both power and torque with 250-plus horsepower and 300 lb.-ft. plus of torque *(hopfully theres over 330ftlbs)* Both V-8 engines are rated between three and four-percent more fuel efficient than the previous Dodge Dakota V-8 engines.

Yes its truck no Hemi for this truck unless they bring back the R/T which is unlikely.

But it does look better than the Durango you have to give Dodge some credit for not making it dorky

They still killed the looks of it.

No more rugged looks.

And...the 2wd and 4wd models now sit at the same ride height??? What is up with that?

Its not near as bad as i thought it would look, but SOcalRT is right...its just kind of a combination of all the other unoriginal designs.
I mean theres nothing better than copying something unoriginal right?!
At least its better than the Durango.
Ill keep my 98 as long as i can, and when the engine dies..in goes a diesel.

Looks like a POS to me. And they're putting the Hemi in the Durango but not the Dak, WTF? I'm glad I have two of the current style. Guess I'll have to replace the motors in mine and drive em into the dirt.

I certainly that they do put a diesel motor in the dakota. Since the Liberty will be sporting a diesel this fall, i suspect that the dakota will be next if the diesel liberty sells well. Maybe it'll the the Detroit Diesel Delta motor!

I live in Detroit, and part of Chrysler test curcuit runs
outside of my building, and I was driving yesterday and got
next to a new quad... (flat black with camo) it looks alot
bigger than the current does, I got next to him, at a light
and revved but he wouldnt race, not a bad looking truck
dimensions wise, but the tailights look pretty gay, it seems
to sit pretty high too.

The problem with DC's wisdom on testing the diesel in the Liberty is that most people with a small SUV don't necessarilly need the kind of torque that a diesel will produce. Gas engines are fine for these people because all most of them do is go by groceries anyhow. But most of us Dakota owners (from what i've seen) actually use our trucks as work trucks. We haul and tow various objects and the torque would be ideal. As long as its a large V6 diesel producing the torque. I don't want some wussy motor that doesn't have the get up and go that my 4.7L does. Obviously it won't be exactly the same but DC could put a diesel in that could get pretty close. Then the guys at Banks could come up with some tuning packages for us.

Dodge already offers a diesel version of the Dak in other countries. Search one of my older posts; "Diesel Dak" for some info and links with pictures. They are a little old but should still work. I would go for a diesel in the current body style, but I'll never buy one of the new ones. Everyone I know that has, or has had, a Dak thinks the new style sucks and they're starting to lean towards Ford. Bunch of the new Durangos on the local dealers lot and they're not selling well. Hope this isn't the end of the Dakota that would be a crime.

At least the new Dakotas aren't as bad as the new Durangos. I thought I'd be able to get used to the new Durangos but then I saw one on the road. Good God it was hideous. It's all bulky, minivan looking. The new Dak isn't that great but it could be worse. I think DC will eventually wise up and realize that people want a functional, hardworking (diesel option), truck that LOOKS like a hardworking truck. Not some wussy a$$ non-funtional that was designed to cater to the soccer dads who have always wanted a truck so they can show off in front of all the other soccer dads on saturdays.
