Subject: Cab Mounts (Step Bars)
IP: Logged

Message:
I recently put on a set of step bars that mount to the cab mounts. Since I removed the factory bolts to do this and put them back on, I now get a sqeak, rattle noise. I was wondering if anybody knew how much torque should be applied to the factory cab bolts. Mine seem to back off!

Can anybody help. I have torqued the cab mount bolts down to 110lbs, but still get a scraping noise.

Is this the same bolts that go through the rubber shock pads to hold the cab to the frame? You don't want to tighten it too much, or it won't work right. The cab needs to "float" on those rubber shock mounts.

Of course, your probally talking about something else...

When I installed my bars, the bolts included with the kit would not tighten up enough before bottoming out in the holes. I just used the factory ones again and was able to get them nice and tight. Your squeek/rattle could be caused by the bolts bottoming before being tight enough. I tightened mine up way tight since I had to use a breaker bar just to loosen the bolts in the cab mounts to get started. Have noticed no difference in the cab.

And I thought I was the only one, I have the same problem. After the step bars were put on it creaks and rattles all the time. The mounts are shot anyway, the cab don't even sit right on the frame, about quarter inch to the pass side. Although with 220K miles I'm not complaining one bit. My beef is that NOBODY makes cab mounts for 4WD ext cab short box 87-96, if you guys know a place please tell me know and I'll donate a kidney!! I've been looking around for about a month now and I'm just bummed out, anyway just my 2 cents

On the 2000, the recommended torque is 55 ft/lbs. That is what the paperwork that came with the body lift says anyways.

I have the Westin nerf bars and I had the same sounds and I found out it was the back bar brace rubbing on the cab mount. The front ones sit right inside the mount, but the back one is bigger and it was rubbing on the edges of the cab mounts making it squeak. I backed the rear ones off just enough so they are not touching and the sounds stopped. I had to put the rubber floater back in without the metal cap because the factory bolt would not start to thread back in with it on the rear ones.
