Hello fellow Dak owners.

I received an email from the NHTSA regarding Dakota and Durango ball joint failures. They are actively investigating the premature wear and failure of our ball joints.

The email has a link to place a complaint and information on premature ball joint wear and failure.

I'm posting the text of the email below. Follow the link to file your complaint on ball joint problems.

NHTSA text follows:

Hello,

My names is Keenan L. Moore, an Engineering Investigator with the Office of Investigations in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration of the Department of Transportation, and along with fellow Investigator Peter Kivett have begun investigation EA03-023 to investigate the possibility of a safety defect in the upper ball joints on the 1999 - 2003 Dodge Dakota's and Durango's. We have received your contact information from Mika Brzezinski by way of Alison Hertel, in responses to a CND Evening News report on the failure of these upper ball joints.

We have begun our own investigation into the issue and are collecting all information available on the issue to better understand the problem. We request that you fill out a Vehicle Owner's Questionnaire with our agency so we can better record the actual amount of defects that are emerging. For convenience it is available on-line at www.nhtsa.dot.gov/hotline or if it is easier feel free to call our 24-hour hotline at 1-888-DASH-2-DOT (327-4236). Please, make sure to fill out any and all related information like; Make, Model, Model Year, VIN, Incident Date, Failure Speed, a complete incident description, and any previous steering or drivability issues along with any dealer repair/assessment information. Your information will help us better understand the warning signs and failure mode of the ball joint. If, you know of any others with the same problem or vehicle, please pass on our information to assist us in our case against Dodge. If you have any question feel free to e-mail me at coop3@nhtsa.dot.gov .

Thank You,

Keenan L. Moore
