I have a 99 Club Cab 4x4 5.2L with about 57k on it. A rattling noise is starting to come from the exhaust right where the cat is and a slight scent of rotten eggs seems to be brewing. I was wondering what the dealer needs to see before replacing a cat under warranty since no engine light or decrease in power has shown. Also, will they give me a hard time about the emissions warranty for having a flowmaster cat back system installed? Thanks for the help.

I have 38000 miles on my 99 CC and I have the same problem. I havent notice any difference in performance. Its not covered under warrenty (i am not sure though), but the cost of a cat converter from Dodge is prolly the cost of a full cat back sysytem.

Well, the emissions warranty is controlled by the government and is something like 80k. Dealers are required to replace faulty emissions equipment.

Your cat is covered by a 9yr 80k mile federal emmisions warrenty.

If it's rattling that means it's loose and needs to be replaced. I put replacing mine off for a year and got stranded while 3 hrs away from home. Not fun...

Check out the thread intitled ALMOST STRANDED.

BTW, when the dealership replaced my cat I had a flowmaster cat back system on the truck and they didn't say a word.

Thanks for the info. Is there a way to make sure that it is indeed the cat that is rattling? I don't want to end up paying a diagnostic fee for the dealer to tell me it is a small exahust leak somewhere. I mean, I am almost sure that the cat is making the noise since the noise just started and people are telling me my truck is louder than usual. Thanks

Well there really isn't anyway of checking if it's loose (that I know of) other than taking the system apart.

The rattling was very noticable when I was under a light load... say sitting in my driveway and just touching the gas a little bit. It didn't always make it either... it came from directly under the passenger seat (obviously)

If your exhaust has gotten louder then it might be a leak. Mine actually got more scilent as time went on. When it was replaced and I heard my flowmaster growling like a fool I almost wet my pants :)
