In my truck when the brake light is on the parking bark is engaged, try releasing it and see if the light still comes on. As for the ABS, I think that it means for anti-lock brake systems, that it isn't working correctly or not working at all, but just a guess.

Mine did the same thing...simply driving along, hit a bump and boom, on came both of those lights..then about 2 seconds later, gone...I am suspecting a loose speed sensor. Mine is a 98 2wd 5.2 SLT

Mine did the same thing today (2000 4.7 4x4 auto). The brake and abs lights came on for a few seconds, then went off. Brakes seem to be working fine.

Did anyone find the problem ?

I talked to a Dodge mechanic today and he told me it is VERY common on our Daks. He said it is the abs sensor at the differential and that it costs about $30 and takes about 10 minutes to replace. If mine does it again, I will replace it.

I just bought a 90 dakota. I stopped by my Dad's house to show it to him, started it back up and both lights have been on ever since. A mechanic friend said the exact same thing about the sensor in the differential. He also said that metal shavings will collect on the sensor thus causing the problem. I hope that's all it is. Brakes seem fine. The lot I bought it from should replace it for me. I will let you all know if it solves the problem. Thanks.

I have a 94 Daktota & had the exact same problem. Both the ABS and brake light was on all the time. I read on this message board about replacing the speed sensor which is on top of the rear differential. Sure enough, replacing the sensor solved the problem!!! Cost: $87.00 from the dealer....$27.00 from NAPA.

Just an FYI if your ABS light comes on, don't worry it just means that the car/truck will have regular breaks

BOTTOM LINE UP FRONT:

Symptoms: ABS and Brake lights on. Speedo not working until I hit 30 mph.

Fix: Replace ABS sensor at differential.

Hey, fellow Dakota owners!

Thanks! Thanks! Thanks!

The input I've found on this site has been a ton of help (especially that from Rascal!).

OK, I was driving back from Corpus Christi yesterday (I live in San Antonio) when my ABS light and brake light came on. I didn't know what to make of it -- and my 4 year old daughter was riding in the truck with me. I was more than a little freaked out -- didn't know if my brakes were about to fail or not. I checked out the entire system physically and everything was fine.

I came home and started searching for information on this issue that was specific to '98 2x4 Dakotas. I found this site and it worked out great. I called the local Dodge dealer and got a new sensor ($32.85 including tax) that included a jumper cable to turn the sensor 90 degrees on the rear diff. The Mopar part included excellent directions on installation.

This installation took me about an hour -- mostly due to the old sensor being stuck in the differential hole. I needed a socket wrench and a box wrench to do the job -- and a standard screwdriver to pry the old sensor out.

Total cost: $37 (parts, Copenhagen and a couple of Cokes).

Total time: A little over an hour.

This site does provide a lot of good information.

I "used" the site for almost a year before I decided to become a paying member so that it can continue.

If you guys really get good information, consider joining up (its only like $35) so it can continue.

Most people will save that much with only one good piece of advice.

I have had the same thing with my 2002
dakota quad from day one! I dont know if the
end result of my light coming was the collision
I had 2 weeks ago, but the first time the brake
light came on the dealer replaced the sensor
this is the explanation from the dealer on my
paperwork, "the only possible way for the light
to flash is that the ABS SYSTEM LOST
POWER intermettantly and does a self test
check again." so everything was fine for a few
weeks the the problen started again so much
that I started writing down the occurances,
somtimes the light would go off 4 or 5 time a
day. The day before I was to take the truck in I
hit the back of another truck I had plenty of
time and distance to stop but my truck did not.
I will have the brake system looked at and let
everyone know the results after the body work
is completed you can look for my old post
"5-10 mph crash photos" or see my web

My 99 dakota, 3.9, 2wd, has same problem...my cruise control has also ceased to function. Anyone know if the CC problem could be related to the faulty speed sensor?

Try this, when mine came on my dad told me to try something and it worked, go in reverse till you hit 15mph or 10mph and slam the brakes, do this 2 or 3 times, see out rearends have a self adjusting thing in them and the way I jsut told you is the way to adjust them, try this, it is worth the try and might save you some cash.

Sorry, that was a pretty vague statement...the result of no sleep. I manually and fully depressed the brake light switch a few times with my finger, and double checked the contact with the brake pedal (which was fine). After doing this, the cruise control now works and the ABS/brake light does not come on. I guess that really is a sensitive switch that seemed to have been stuck.
