Subject: Dash / Left Airbag Removal

Ok, My heater core is leaking and I'm pulling my dash. I have everthing off that would be pulled if you were changing out the stereo, plus the trim that runs just below the Windshield. Next to come off is the trim in from of that (basically the front edge of the dash the runs the width of the truck). To get this off that darn cover on the front of the passenger side airbag has to come off, as well as the right side vent housing. I'm stuck on the airbag. The plastic I believe is just the blast cover to the airbag unit and thus it is all one piece. I.E Do NOT pull off! So I took off the 2 10mm bolts that were behide where the glove compartment was as well as the 2 10 mm bolts on the under side of the airbag. The whole thing is now loose and can be moved around abit, but it wont come out. I can't seem to find anymore bolts to take off and I really dont want to start yanking on this thing. any ideas - what I'm I messing here?

Thanks,

Ok, no. If the airbag module was pop riveted in then it would not be moving an inch each way freely. nor could you then ever get the rest of the dash out and get to whats back there, heater core, whatever. So. Anyone out there finished this job and actualy got the dash out. Does the airbag even need to come out? so far it looks like it as there are some screws for the dash behind that cover.

Thanks again
Steven

Yes persistence does pay off. You the next guy looking to do this, here is how:

For 2001 DK - passanger side airbag removal.

Once you have reached this point the only dash trim that should be left is:

--the blast cover on the air bag.
--the front dash trim (the front edge that runs the width of the truck.
--the right side vent

What ever you do, do not try to pry the blast cover off from the bottom - it is permanently attached to the airbag unit!

First find the 4, 10 mm bolts that are securing the airbag unit and take them out. Two should be right in front at the base of the cover. and two more are one the under side. (if you haven't already - also remove the all screws attaching the blast cover to the dash and frame.) The airbag unit will now be loose and can be giggled.

Now using a flat head screw driver, and starting on the right, begin to pry the blast cover out from the dash from the TOP. Push the screw driver up against the dash slowly. There are five plastic snaps that secure the cover to the dash and this is what you are prying loose. You are not trying toremove the cover from the unit itself, just the dash. They are tight but will pop free with a little pressure. Once the first is out you should then be able to see the location of the next and so on.

After these five snaps are out the airbag unit will be completely free, except for the wiring harness. and yes it is another one of those annoying self locking ones. If you dont have the proper tool (Which I didn't) you can just pry that off of the frame with your trusty screw driver as well. It is held on with two plastic fasteners. If you do it nice and slow the fasteners will survive well enough for reasembly.

Once the harness in free from the frame- pull the entire unit out and then disconnect the harness.

Congrats you now can continue with the rest of dash and that right side vent...
