Subject: Rough sounding noise when you turn...
IP: Logged

Message:
I recently bought a 1998 dakota 4x4,reg cab,5.2 V8,Auto trans with 70,000 mi. The problem I'm having is when you come to a complete stop and then make a right or left turn, sometimes there is a rough grinding noise coming from underneath the truck. Truck drives fine anyother time,no popping, rattles or shakes. This is my first 4wd, but the noise sounds and feels like a bad CV joint in a FWD car.Any advice would be helpful..

I had the same thing on a 1990 Subaru Legacy which is as bad on maintenance problems as a Dak. However. The problem is most likely a bad cv-axle if you have IFS.

One other thing I have noticed is it doesnt do this when first driven or just around town, only after diven highway miles 20-30miles.
Could this be after diff. oil heating up?

I had a similar symptom with my 2000 4X4. It turned out to be the limited slip dif.

Thanks Phil; What did you do to correct your problem? I was told that i should try changing the diff. oil and adding a additive. Anyone tried Amsoil products for this?

The noise started just a couple months before the warranty ended so I took it to the closest dealer.
They gave me the usual runaround saying the noise was normal. A call to DC got the dealer to call me back for another look. They ended up replaceing the differential, some bearings and the ring and pinion gears. That cured that noise as well as a high pitched whine that occurred around 40 MPH.

Phil:I hope it doesnt come to that since I have no warranty. But ive never bought a used vehicle that i didnt have to sink a few hundred $ into.

You won't be surprised then to discover that the Dakota is no exception. After reading this forum for a couple years now it seems the Dakota has several common problems produceing sounds which are hard to pinpoint. Good luck.
