Subject: Advice on selling please.
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 2002 SXT and it's time to part with it. It's a CC, 4WD, 31,000 miles, two tone silver over charcoal, am/fm single cd, dual air bags, a/c, I think that's about it. Right now it's totally stock. It DOES NOT have power window, power locks, cruise. The blue book value on it is $16,360 the way it is. If I add a custom stereo, power window, power locks, cruise, bed liner, alarm, fog lights, the blue book becomes $16,760. Obviously, those upgrades would be much more then $400 so that doesn't sound right to me. Is it? In your opinion, what mods if any would up the sale value enough to make it worth it?

Also, can anyone recommend a good site/magazine/dealer to post my truck?

I owe about $16,000 on it, is that the best I can hope to get out of it?

Thanks all.

What you need to do is start looking to see what similar Dakotas are selling for in your neck of the woods and shoot for that. The true value is what a buyer is willing to pay, not what Kelley Blue book says. And if it's an SXT Im guessing it's a V6. Cheaping out on the engine options when you bought it is what REALLY caused you to miss the boat on retail value. IVe seen trucks like yours offered on dealers' lots with an asking price of 17, meaning they could probably go out the door for about the same as what you're thinking of asking for yours. IF you were in the market for an 02 SXT, would you rather buy it from an established dealer or some guy you dont know, if price was the same?

Most of the times mods don't sell a truck. Bone stock with some chrome sells well. The only way you can make it worth more is to add options; however, if you where to do that you would never get your money back.As Eddy said, price it by looking at the prices of other trucks in your area. Keep in mind that I can go to the dodge dealer and get an 04 4x4 sxt for 18K pluse 2500 cash back.

Options drop in value just like your truck did, makes no sense to try and up the value that way. Which blue book value are you talking about ? There are several. Advertise it as a private sale for the highest value, and bargain down from there.

Thanks for the input guys.

Rooster. You can't get one like mine for 18 unless you give great head. An 04 similiar to mine goes for 25, -3,500 cash back = 21,500. That's more then I paid for mine 2 years ago.

I live in one of the richest counties in the country so I think I'll be able to get a decent price out of it, I just have to figure out how to market is the best way.

I havn't found any dakotas around here for sale so i'm not sure if that's good, or bad. I do see quite a few of them driving around. On ebay they seem to be 18-20 but i doubt they are selling on there. anyways, thanks.

Ummm... you're taking the rebates from sticker? It's usually more common if you time your purchase right and know how to negotiate to get the rebates of invoice, hence the numbers rooster gave. I think If you price it at about 16 in advertisements you'll get peoples' attention, but my prediction is you'll end up having to let it go for closer ot 15.

I got my fully loaded 03 SLT+ 4x4 AWD CC automatic V8 for $23,445 a year ago and I didn't give any head. I can't believe that an SXT would sell for $21,500 even when new.

And by the way I only give mediocre head. Now keep in mind I bought my 04 in the end of 03. A couple months later in mid Feb when I went for service they had an 04 except with with 5 speed manual, no fog lights, and buckets instead of a bench, that stickered for over a thousand dollars less, meaning I probably could have gotten that one for 23K if I wanted it.

And the 15 grand is not in refernce to a brand new SXT. Its about what I think his used 2 year old one will end up selling for.

The sticker on an SXT is about 25,300, so he talked them down 4 grand. Unfortunatly resale on our trucks is way below average. That wouldn't be a problem if they were worth keeping. Personally with the way technology and my tastes change every few years, leasing is the best way to go.

The private party sale for your truck in my area (NC) is 14,800 in good condition or 15,800 in excellent condition, which few are.

When I punch in the zip for Beverly Hills, CA it only raises it about $300. So... I don't know what you're looking at to get your value, but it's different than what I'm looking at, which is KBB.com...

Actually... now Im noticing he referred to it as 'CC', not 'QC'. My fault, I thought we were talkin about a Quad Cab all this time. So this is a CLUB CAB V6 we're talking about? Then yes, 17-18K for a new 04 DEFINITELY sounds about right. Edmunds prices a brand new Club Cab with a few options at about 19 after all is said and done with rebates, and it stickers for 24. But paying 17-18K is not unheard of on a truck equipped like that if you know how to wheel and deal.

I see 2 yr old QUAD V6s for 17 all the time and V8 QUADS about the same age with similar mileage for 18 or 19. We're talking about a CLUB CAB V6. I think his will end up selling for 15.

Why do people buy a new vehicle then sell it in 2 years anyway? It would be quicker to just use a lighter on your money. When I buy a vehicle I keep it until it's run into the ground.

Now Im looking again at what his options were, I musta been daydreaming when I looked at it the first time.... no power windows and locks? Yeah, DEFINITELY 15K or thereabouts. You can find much better optioned Club Cabs for what the OP is hoping to get. I think sometimes people forget that it's not automatic that you're entitled to get what you owe when you sell it.

Garrett, he was including the $3,500 rebate, so that was actually only $500 off the sticker price, not $4,000.

When I bought my SLT+, they were offering a discount on the SXTs that basically amounted to giving the SXT package away for free (in other words, it was about the same price as base). What exactly is in the SXT package, anyway? Wheel flares and what else?

Wow, nothing one day, and all this the next. Thanks guys.

Justi- i used kbb.com as well, that's where I got 16,300 - 16,700. I'm in Fairfield/westchester counties (much higher then beverly hills, though don't think i'm helping the average income much lol.)

Dubious- the "x" package has always been included for free. It includes the flares, badging, and the wheels that everyone else has. The interior is also different, but i'm not sure how. And 2 years ago, the huge selling point was the 7 year warranty. There wasn't $3,500 back, I was able to qualify for $1,500 back which was the max.

I purchased the truck in Idaho, now i'm in Connecticut. There must be a huge difference where you all live because I just can't find a pickup similiar to mine listed for less then 18.

Garrett and another mark- Leasing is for sure the way to go. I don't exactly see how 400 bucks a month is burning money mark. I guess that's good to run a vehicle into the ground, there are several reason's i want a new one every few years. Like Garrett said, it's nice to change for the sake of change, and it's nice to have the newer stuff. There is no reason for me to have a truck in this area. Though the new rams are really starting to grow on me. The last reason is I'm just sick of the continued maintenance on this thing, granted it's probably worse with the dakota. It'll be nice to have a reliable vehicle no matter what. If i keep it, i'm paying 400 a month for 2-3 more years. According to you guys, by then i'll be lucky to give it away. Then i'm back in the same spot. Leasing I can drive the nicest newest stuff at about the same monthly cost and I get to change every couple years. Not to mention the countless maintenence costs I'll save down the road.

Anyways, I appreciate everyones input. By the way, i've put for sale signs on the truck for $19,500. We'll see what happens. I still havn't decided where else to advertise it.

Leasing is a waste no matter how you look at it. Making payments for 2 years and owning nothing is money lost. Are you rich? If not then consider owning a vehicle for 10 years. That's 5-6 years of payments and 4-5 years of payment less ownership. Then it can be sold for whatever it is worth. Do the math you will come out ahead even with the repairs not covered in the post warranty years.
I'm not sure why people always want the "newer stuff". It is always best to buy a vehicles in the later years of model production. Or at least after the first 2 years. Manufacturers bank on working out the problems with their vehicles on your time these days. Time=money so even when leasing or buying a new vehicle repairs cost you money. Not to mention the "throw away" attitude that these buyers/leaser's exhibit when aquiring a new vehicle every 2 years. Guess they figure we have a place to put all the garbage.

Your 4-5 years of "paymentless ownership" is a myth. Mantenance costs, (not repairs) grow significantly as the vehicle ages. That's to say nothing of the cost of repairs. To assume that once the payments end you'll have a free ride is ignorant. I still fail to see the positive point in paying on this thing for 3 more years. After that I own it, so what? It's worthless by then anyways. I'm far from rich, but I'm doing just fine paying 400 per month for a vehicle. If your struggling to make the payments as it is, then of course it'll be nice when it's finally paid off, but if that's the case you probably shouldn't have made such a big purchase in the first place. All I'm saying is that I've had my dakota for 2 years, with only the typical dak problems so far. If i were in a lease rather then being tied to the damn thing, I could move on to something better. Change is good. You talk about have ownership in it like you view it as some sort of investment. I know that can't be true, no one is dumb enough to hold on to an investment that depreciates daily.

OK First... if youre posting your Dak for over 19, please tell me how it turns out. Id love to know considering I can get a 2 year old V8 Quad for that much and I can get a brand new 04 Club Cab V6 for that much if not a little less.

As for leasing vs. buying... Leasing ONLY makes sense as a tax write-off for business purposes. Plain and simple. OTherwise, the benefit of buying is once those payments are made, they can then be applied to your own net worth on a montly basis instead of to pay off the truck. Whereas if you lease, you never get a chance to start making those payments work for you instead of agaisnt you. Any other reason for leasing, other than the tax benefits, is a rationalization to justify the fact that you cannot do the smart thing and hold a vehicle for more than a few years. IF that's the way you want to do it, fine, to each his own, but dont try to somehow spin leasing as making financial sense to make yourself feel better about your own lack of discipline or your fickleness towards your vehicles.

Sure, repairs become necessary as a vehicle ages, but in most cases it's not 3-400 dollars worth of repairs, every single month, for another 48-60 months. It's an occasional lump sum that in the long run costs you less than the montly payments and insurance on something new. So to try to argue that you come out ahead by changing vehicles every 3 years because you dont have to pay for expensive repairs is ludicrous.

IMHO... best way to deal with vehicles... keep making those payments to yourself every month after the bank is satisfied and hold a vehicle until it REALLY makes no financial sense to keep it running anymore. You do this often enough, you can easily pay cash so you no longer have to worry about leasing vs. buying, or trying to figure out how to get out of a vehicle that's worth 15 grand that you over 16 on.
