Subject: swap 88 3.9 w 92 3.9
IP: Logged

Message:
I currently own a 1988 dakota 4wd with a 3.9 and 3spd auto. I recently aquired a 1992 dakota sport 4wd with a 3.9 magnum and a 5 spd tranny.the 92 has had a front hit and sustained frame damage radiator and cooling fan damage.all that said the drive train appears to be in good working order.the 92 3.9 if I am correct would have 50 more HP than the 88 (125 VS 175), as well as have many more aftermarket parts and bolt on applications available.Does any one know if the 88 dakota will accept a 92 engine ( and all componets inc.computer),or would I have trouble with fuel psi , o2 sensors tranny link up ect. Also if I do infact swap would I be ahead to convert the 88 to a standard and use the 92s tranny> any help would be great ...

I've got a similar situation son totaled his 92
2wd auto sport bought a 88 4wd 5spd that had
a fire in heater box and melted the dash etc
planning on swapping interiors with 92 with all
that going on changing engines wouldn't be
that much extra work i hope

george-the 92 dash int. should fit with no major problems

clayzoo-that change is very do-able
computer,engine,trans,wiring and yes you
have a 50hp jump, same O2 and if you have fuel pressure problem swap pumps

how bad is the frame bent?if it can be straighten
cheap, you could take the front clip off the 88 and put it on the 92,frt fenders, hood, rad.,
bumper and rad.support, this would be less work,
just a thought
