I think that Dodge is still scratching their ball joints and trying to
figure out what to do (or who to blame).

It was hard to tell, but it looked like to me all the vehicles they showed with front steering knuckel/wheel seperation were 4wd. They all had severe rust on the broken joints.

There's not much to figure out. Put grease fittings on the ball joints and grease them. It might raise the cost of the joint 25 cents.

does anyone know for sure if this problem is just with 4x4.or has their also been problems with 4x2.I only have 16,000 miles on my 2001 dakota but i think i am going to check mine.I watched the report on cbs but i don't think i heard about the mileage on the ball joints that failed does anyone know?one thing is for sure they were dry as a bone.seems to me a simple fix recall and add grease fittings not that expensive.

I own a 98 SC 2wd and I have zerk (spelling) fittings on my ball joints. They look and work fine to me. Why on earth would they use non lubricating type ball joints to begin with?

Makes you wonder, doesn't it ? Back in the muscle car era, mopar used to break the zerk fittings off at the factory after greasing them. The idea was to sell people on the idea of lower maintenance. Result was ball joints that wore out prematurely. We just don't seem to learn much from history !

Is there anything you can do to fix it once you already have one? Can you get a ball joint replaced? And if you can, will the second one wear out like the first?

Read the posts above your answers are there. If you buy the Moog's they certainly won't wear like your originals as they have zerk fittings.

Graham,
What part of the steering column wore out?

It is possible to put grease zerks in the existing ball joints. I used to do it to Ford and Volkswagan front ends. You have to be careful drilling the holes so that you don't get debri inside the joint. Then you drive the grease zert in with the driver tool. It's pretty easy to do.

Okay, now this has me thinking. I am buying a 2000 Dakota Quad Cab on Saturday that has 60,204 miles. Should I still get it? Is there anything that I should check out first? It's a 2 wheel drive one. Any suggestions?

Well it's a $600 fix. Is it still worth it to you? Even if yours weren't bad at the time you bought it, how long will you still value being alive until you put good ones in it ?

Its still worth it if the price on the truck is right. Just bring some coveralls to the dealership (they love that) and crawl up under and take a look and see. If you can't tell ask for a test drive. Then drive it over to your mechanic and ask him or her to take a look for you.

I think the truck is worth the price ($12k), since I could not find a 4 door truck that I liked in that price range. I called the dealership and they said they will double check the ball joints for me. Even if they are okay, I think I'll change them anyway.

Why change good ones?

My QC 2001, has ~51K, and so far, knock on wood, the ball joints, and the front brakes are still original. 2wd, 4.7.

I recently bought an 01 QC 4x4. I had them throw in the 8yr/100k gold extended warranty. Ball joints are covered. BTW, when I bought it, I traded in a '95 Chevy Blazer (S10) 4x4. I had to replace the ball joints on that, but not until about 135k miles. From what I understand, it's a very common Chevy problem too. It cost me $200 per side to have them replaced.

CBS didn't wimp out. We can only do a fair and balanced story
when both sides talk to us. Sometimes we only get half the
story and have to say the other side had no comment. D.C.
wimped out by letting this problem continue. I was expecting
some more meat to the story instead of a one-sided piece, but
oh well. Those NHTSA figures they presented were pretty scary
though.
