Dakota98,

I know this is "off-topic" for me to post here but I feel that I must. There is more to be concerned about than just the transmission

#1) Get the VIN # = the Vehicle Identification Number
#2) Go to www.carfax.com - a free website that will let you check the VIN # and see some of it's history ... your best protection against buying a used truck with costly, hidden problems (i.e. Salvaged, Lemon, Flooded, Rebuilt, Odometer Check, Major Accident, Salvage Auction, Fire Damage, Stolen, Registration, Etc.)
#3) Ask the owner for all the service receipts

If you have already decided upon the vehicle and have your financing approved, and are willing to risk a little money to have it checked out then ...

Depending upon where you live ... your local dealer will check out the truck for free or for a small charge. Why? Because he wants your business after you make the purchase. Ask some of your Dakota Buddies! They may be in tight with the service department already.

Or ... ask around. Your buddies should know a mechanic that they trust to look under the hood and underneath the truck. Usually this will cost you a 6-pack or two of GOOD beer ... not the cheap stuff.

Hope this helps. I know this topic is not lubrication related. i've just seen so many buyers get ripped of that i had to say something.

What was a tranny shop going to do for the
checkout, remove the pan? If they did that, might
as well replace filter and fluid. That's still
not a sure bet it's gonna last.

Most trannys give no warning when they are about
to give trouble. It's a chance you take buying
used. One thing is for sure, todays Chrysler
trannys are not the best made. Lots of problems
for a lot of owners.

I like Dodge and plan to stick with them but stick
shift will be my next one.

Good luck on your find.

Radio-man,

I have a stick shift and also have an apointment this week at the dealer to have it looked at.
I hope it's nothing but I have been having a very hard time getting into first and reverse lately.
As I said, I hope it's nothing but maybe the falts with the standard are just different ones.
wish me luck!
