Subject: HELPTRUCK won't start when it's wet out

Message:
I have an o1 Dak with the four banger in it. Lately whenever it rains or snows the truck will not start. It rolls over fine but does not even come close to firing. If I let it sit for a day or two it starts fine. When it does run it does not miss fire or hesitate. At first I thought it may be bad gas but now I suspect it is a electrical issue. Perhaps a cracked distributor? Any suggestions? Anyone heard of this prob before? TX Mike.

Sounds similar to a problem I had in another truck. Turned out to be the ignition coil was cracked. What happens is the moisture in the air allowed for better conduction causing the spark to arc to the engine block. In dry air, this is less likely to occur and allows for the engine to start. Maybe the source of your problem as well. An easy way to check it is to spray soapy water around the ignition wires while its being started by someone else. The soapy water really conducts well and allows for arcing to be observed.

It could be a multitude of areas that it is happening, but definitely sounds like the water is shorting the ignition somewhere. Just trace the entire ignition system and I think you'll find either a crack on something, ie coil or dist cap, or worn insulation on a wire that's not bad enough to arc unless it's wet.
