Subject: Fog Lights revisited

Message:
I've done quite a bit of reading through past posts on installing aftermarket fog lights. I still have some fuzzy spots though and was hoping for some input.

I have purchased Pilot 119X for $75. My 01 dak has the bracket for the foglights as well as the 20amp fuse. I will need to get a relay as the socket is open. I think I have found the stock wires and connectors for fog lights. They are wired tied up under the center shroud - the one that has the removeable door for oil changes. There are 2 each with two wires and orange gromets - can someone verify these are the correct wires?

In the cab I did not find any wires for a switch. I'm not sure where exactly the switch would be if the truck had come with factory fogs. I've read that some use a seperate switch under the 4wd switch and others are integrated into the headlight switch. I didn't find any plugs by the 4wd switch and the headlight switch does not seem to pull out when the park/headlights are on as I've read some do to operate factory fogs.

Here's how I want to operate my fogs: I want to have them operate with the park and headlights and independently (using stock wiring if possible). However, if they are operated by the parks do they have to flash when using the keyless entry?

Also, I know from my readings that when using the factory wiring/relay with aftermarkey fogs the lights will want to stay on all the time. I will be putting plastic washers in between the fog mounting brackets and the fogs themselves to kill the ground as someone else posted.

Thanks in advance for your replies,
Brent

I know the switch was bulit into the headlamp switch on the 2000 and later models. I've owned a 2000, 2001, and 2002 and they all were that way. To use the factory switch will require changing out the entire light switch. UNLESS, you already have the correct light switch. To find out, rotate your light switch to the ON position. Then pull on the switch. If the switch pops out about a 1/4" then you already have the correct switch. I've never checked one w/out fog lights to see if they already had the switch or not.

Also, if the switch is the correct one then the wires are probably already there and hooked up. That would mean all you have to do is plug in your lights at the factory connectors you already found up front and you are done.

Good Luck

Then I must not have the right switch to run the fogs. Anyone have a p/n for the fog switch and the price?

If it's like everything else the dealer will want 3 times what's it's worth. I'd call around some bone yards. Probably could pick one up for a 1/3 of the dealer cost.

Mine is a 02 and I never did find any wires for
fog lamps.. I also knew that if it did have
factory lamps, the headlamp switch would have had
the pull out for them.

I did what 99% of Dak owners did, ran my own
wiring with switch mounted on dash to a fused
relay under the hood.

Mine are true yellow fogs also. Plus with factory
white fogs, when you switch to high beam lights,
the fogs will shut off. I didn't care for that on
my 01 full size Ram.

It's not that bad of a job to do yourself. Just
use at least 14 guage wire and make sure you fuze
it.

Does anyone have a wiring diagram at least for the wires going to the headlight switch? I went to the parts store but they said there was no manual made past 2000 for the daks. Mine is '01 but maybe it makes no diff.

The reason I'm asking as I have disassembled my headlight switch and think there may be a way to use it buy just adding a copper connector dodge left out. I wanted to verify this through a wiring diagram.

If it's true it may be a good tip for other owners.

Thanks.

The headlight switch Part # is 56045 533AD for the 2001 with Fog and Cargo lamps. I will send the 2001 diagram in .pdf format to your e-mail if you send it.

Dodge dealerships have a fog light retrofit kit available for $179.00. You do not use your headlight switch with this kit. The kit has a switch you mount to the dash.

That file would be great Mykr. My email is: pardegt@excite.com

By the way what are the cargo lamps you referred to?
Thanks.

Ouch! $179 for a couple lenses, bulbs and a lame switch that mounts anywhere? You could get your own kit at any auto parts store for $40.

Thanks to Mykr for the wiring diagram.

Can anyone verify if the headlight switch from a ram will work in the dakota? They appear the same from the front but could not tell if mounting points or connectors are the same.

This is really the only part I believe I still need as I said I already have the Pilot fogs and this truck has the fuse, spot for relay and wires up front for the lights. I've already cut my holes and mounted the lights (looks great compared to the blank "bubbles" in the bumper cover). I just need a switch which I prefer to use a stock headlight/fog switch if I can get a good deal on one. I'm not sure yet but I may need to run some additional wires to the new switch.

My idea to modify my current non fog switch does not appear doable.

Thanks

As an edit from my last post it appears (at least visually) that the headlight switches from 2001-2004 Dakotas and 2002-2004 ram are the same. Maybe someone here's know if this is indeed a fact.

Thanks.

Try calling the dealer and asking for the part numbers.

As for the kit the dealer sells, it consists of two fog lights, a wiring harness, brackets and longer bolts with nuts for mounting the fog lights to the frame. If I had it all to do over I would just go with the Pilots. My truck had the factory wiring so all I needed was the foglights, relay and switch. The wiring harness is collecting dust in my garage.

Just like brent at the top of this message, I have read about 100 of the past threads on after market lights. 50 say one thing, 50 say another.
I have a 2000 QC Sport with the 4.7.
I DO currently have fog lights.
I simply want to swap out the factory lights with aftermarket lights.
From what I have read, I have everthing needed for the proper circuit, and I can simply plug the aftermarket lights into the connectors for the old factory fogs without any extra wiring and BS. Correct?
Also, it seems most people are using PIAA510s or a certain kit from Pilot. Do both fit the stock valance hole, and mount easily?
