hello people,

i am looking into purchasing this vehicle.. its a 1998 Dodge Dakota, 4x4, club cab, v8 engine..
it had 67,000 miles on it.. i did alot of research, and it seems that these trucks have problems with alot of things... i heard that ball joints suck and go bad, catalytic converter goes bad, brakes are bad, clutch fan, water pump, tranny goes bad...it is said to tow 6700, but can only do 2000... basically i heard a whole bunch of things evil with this truck...

i figured i would get ur opinions... are these just horror stories, and complete rare screw ups, or is it true and common ???

I would say it's neither. Not rare or common. When you research this board or any other fan sites you'll find a lot of problem posts. But, they are real problems, just not necessarily representative of the entire line.

For every owner you find that has had "nothing but problems" you'll find 9 guys that have 100k miles and never had a problem other than routine maintenance. But the same can be said for all vehicles.

The ball joint problem IS wide spread and while it doesn't affect everyone by any means, it affects more than it's fair share. But I wouldn't think the cost of moog replacements should deter you from buying a vehile.

So yeah, there are problems, just as with all vehicles, but they are problems all the same and you were smart to research them.

Chevy 4x4's have a problem with the yoke sliding out because it's too long, not to mention their piston slap deal. Dodge's have balljoints and an assorted other lot of problems. They ALL do. So basically it's pick your poison.

I like my Dakota quite a bit and don't have a single regret. But I WILL have problems with it even if I haven't so far, it's the name of the game.

That said, if the problems people mention scare you off then I couldn't blame you for that either. Buy what your comfortable with..
