Subject: Squeaky 4wd suspension

First off my truck is a 2003 with approx 22000 highway miles. It is just under a year old.

On cold days, below 30 degrees F, my right front tire squeaks over any bumps. The truck sounds like it should be a 1950 something chevy or something. It is awful and it does completely go away if the temperature gets "warm" ie. around 40 degrees or so.

I have ruled out the rear leaves and even the drivers side front. I sprayed all of the bushings with white lithium grease and that made no difference, could this be too thick to get in there. Anyone else have this or should I jsut take it to the darn dealer? I would rather fix it myself.

Think it could be the shock as I know the truck rides like it has no shocks at all.

Thanks,

Chris

I have a 2001 QuadCab 4X4.

I have the same problem, I found it came from the sway bar bushings.

Every couple of months I take the bushings off and grease them. When I hear the squeaking and thunking on turns I grease them again.

This usually works for me.

Thanks I'll have to try the torsion bars as I have already greased the sway bar bushings to no avail.

Chop3206,

I hate to tell ya but that clunk is your ball joints, they are bad and will need to be replaced, if all they did was grease them your dealer is screwing you because they know what it is, there is about seven tsb's out on it. Get it done soon so the warranty covers it.

Don't put grease on sway bar bushings. This will deteriorate them over time.

It is definitely a squeak not a clunk.

I have a 02 quad cab and it sqeeks and clunks in the front too. They replaced one of the front shocks a few months ago and the noises went away. Then last month it started clunking again. I just took it in and they replaced the rack and pinion steering assembly and now it is a lot better but it still clunks and is loose. The truck goes back in on Fri. The truck only has 34K on it with NO off roading. The warrenty is almost up. No offense to all the Dakota owners but I am really starting to hate my Dakota. I am planning on trading it in on a new Titan next month. This thing has really been a headache. Plus the check engine light came on last week and they said all it needed was to be flashed. I use to own a brand new Dodge Diesel extra cab and had problems with it also. I am giving up on Dodge.

I hate to give up on my Dakota. Mine has over 50K miles on it and it is starting to display the symptoms of a worn out front end too. Ball joints need to be replaced and now the front suspension is starting to squeek.

I've done research on the new Nissan Titans and they look to be the truck that I was in the market for when I settled for my Dakota. Unfortunately my Dakota has a pretty crappy trade in value and it doesn't get much better if I try to sell it privately.

Oh well, guess I'll milk this truck for another year and then sell it. I was really hoping to have this Dakota for another 5 years at least, but I'm afraid it won't last that long. Bummer Dodge. "Ram Tough" sure doesn't mean what it used to...

That squeak is probably the front sway bar bushings. They are poly, and you can't use standard grease. It has to be synthetic. I'm with tlc361, I grease them every 4-6m or so.

I don't remember having noise under my truck but I do remember my husband under it not long after I bought it, I asked him if something was wrong and he say he was lubing something, I just showed him this page and he said that he lubed the torsion bar sockets with a product called Tri-Flow. It won't hurt the rubber and contains teflon, and is an outstanding lube.

I used to use never sieze when I was in the business. It doesn't hurt the rubber and it lasts longer than grease... ( won't wash out ). BTW, my dealer is going to replace all my bushings for the stabilizer and torsion bars because of the same squeek.
