Subject: Distributer Leak? HELP!
IP: Logged

Message:
Hi guys i need a little help/advice. I have a 92 dak with a v6 and i seem to have a slight oil leak at the distributer base(where the distributer and the engine block meet). Is there a gasket or an o ring here? How hard is it to replace. Does anyone have any advice. Please help. Thanks in advance...

Well, not knowing for sure I think there is an O-ring in place there. On my old S10 V6 there was. (Yeah I know not a dodge) but it's a learning curve. About getting it off, I think there is a way to just pull it out....BUT DONT TRY UNTIL YOU GET A SCEMATIC. Distributer stem is not something you want to break off.

I know that there is a brass bushing below the intake and top of the block on the distributor shaft that can go out of round. But this causes misfires or non-firing because the timing goes out of whack. Don't know if this could be the cause for the oil. The procedure on this bushing is to removed the distributor, run this special tool down the hole to snag that bushing and replace it. The check for this bushing is to remove your cap and wiggle the shaft from side to side every 90 degrees of rotation. If it wobbles then it's out of round. Probably more info than you need but that's all I know.

are you sure it's the distributor and not the oil sending unit? it's right there by the dist.

dodge dude, there is an o-ring type gasket at the base of the distributor, but leak could also come from the oil pressure sender, intake gaskets or valve cover gaskets could be leaking also.

its 12 years old. as long as it runs don't worry about it. don't park it where it leaves oil stains in your garage or driveway. just think of it as the 1st reason to start looking for a new truck.

if you're really THAT bored, AND you really want to fix it, AND you're sure its really the distributor......

your boredom problem is easy to solve. removing the distributor is a royal pain the a$$. i'm not sure but i believe that the distributor goes through a hole in the top rear of the intake manifold. unfortunately the air plenum on the manifold obstructs your access to the distributor while the engine is in the truck. removing the engine would make things easier and harder.

so your best bet is to remove the fuel rails and "crossover" pipe at the rear of the manifold. you'll have several sensors & actuators, etc to remove as well just to get the fuel rails off. then MAYBE you can see enough to get to the distributor hold down clamp and remove it. once its out you can lift the distributor out and replace the gasket/bushing at the base of the distributor.

now for the hard part. you have to get the distributor back in, pointed the same location it was in when it came out (or you have to get the cylinder #1 to top dead center & point the distributor to cylinder #1 - which ever method you think is easier), get the clamp back on - snug but not tight yet. replace the fuel rails, sensors & actuators, etc that you'd removed. then get a timing light & adjust the timing.

the difficult part is getting visisbility and access behind the intake manifold.

note that if the distibutor doesn't mount through the intake manifold just take of the entire manifold. this makes access to the distributor easier. but removing and re-installing the intake manifold is no trivial task.

ACTUALLY, i can easily reach my distributer with my hand and it does not go through the intake manifold at all it goes into the engine block itself. i can reach the holddown clamp right now without yanking my engine or removing any sensors. I have already removed and re installed my intake manifold with great success i even replaced the plenum gasket while i was in there. i have quite a bit of visibility and access behind the intake manifold also....
