What is the difference between the A-500 four speed and the 42RH four speed. Did they change in a certain year?, is one stonger?, or is one for 4x4?

No difference other than the upgrades that were made in later models. The 42RH designation appeared in 1994. 4= four speed, 2= relative torque rating, R= rear wheel drive, H= hydraulically controlled shifting.

They were used for earlier models as well.
