I just bought a used dakota 5.9 R/T. i drove it home and i heard this noice that sounded like it was coming from the windshield, i didnt feel any cold air coming into the cab. When i got home i sprayed the windshield with some water and then i got into the truck and felt around the windshield to see if any water got in but didn't. I drove the truck around for alittle bit around my neighbor hood and i thought about lookin under the hood to see. i did that and a pcv valve was missing, so i bought one from auto zone and put it in. i cranked it and it fired but killed right on over. i did it again and gave it some gas and it started smokin real bad. would the timin be off or something??????? i aint goin to take to the dealership in my town cause they've been workin on my dads truck for over 3 years now to try and fix it.

I'd check all your vacuum lines to make sure they're not cracked and are seated properly. Unless it was done by the previous owner it may be a good time to swap the plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor.

Kevin,
Dude, you have been had. I know because I did it to a car I was trading in. I was getting so much blow-by at the pistons that the pcv valve was sucking oil into the intake. I unhooked the pcv valve and connected a rubber hose to the valve cover long enough to let the oil vapors go out under the car. I took it to the dealer and traded it. It sounds like someone has done the same thing to your R/T. It more than likely needs a new set of rings and it may even have a broken ring.

How many miles does it have on it?

Man, you shouldn't have this problem at 33K.

Did you pop the oil filler cap off to see if it is blowing a lot of hot air out while running?

You should be able to put your hand over the hole. If it's in real good condition it will suck your hand to the valve cover. Some motors are OK with more blow-by. If it pushes your hand away or if it sounds like a pussy-fart when you try to cover the hole then you got problems.

If you are having a lot of blow-by, it may be just a broken ring. You can pull one spark plug out (leave the other 7 even) and run it to see if it stops. You will have to do all 8 cylinders of course. So it will take a while. If you see little or no difference in the amount of blow-by then you need rings. If you get to a cylinder (with the plug removed) and your blow-by stops, then you have a broken ring on that cylinder and possibly pieces of the piston broke. I had a Mitsu with a 1.8L 4cyl that was real bad about breaking the ring lands off the pistons and the rings would break also. It was only a 4cyl engine. I broke 6 pistons and 11 sets of rings in that POS in 88,000 miles.

She sounds like she's tight. I've seen them blowin out the oil filler cap so bad that you couldn't poor oil in with the engine running. It sounds like someone worked on it that didn't know what the hell they were doing. You don't have any check engine lights and the oil filler hole is suckin so go TRUCKIN.
