I'm wondering about the Getrag 238 manual 6-speed transmission.

Seeing how the NV3500HD in my Quad Cab had to be replaced at 50,000 with input shaft bearing, 3rd and 5th gears in bad shape (according to the dealer).

Yes... What did they do about the ball joints?

I saw the Dakota on the assembly line back in December they were building a pre-production truck. I told everone about it. But was told I was full of crap. But anyway the front suspension still has crappy ungreasable ball joints but it is a totally new front end. On the 4X4 the front end is coilsprings over the shocks and has upper and lower a-arms.

I'm going to go talk to some dealerships and see if they have any info. I'll let you guys know.

Glad to see they raised the tow capacity rating to something closer to reality (7000 lbs) and added the HO version. That's probably just a PCM change. I hope we can add to the ones we have! I guess I'll have to keep my regular cab. I can't use a long wheel base in my barn or I would have bought a full size in the first place.

One thing I noticed that I didn't like was that they cheaped out on the guages . No more oil pressure or voltmeter , you get gas , temp and a tach and that looks like about all . I want a full set of guages for the thing . I don't want some dummy light telling somethings wrong by then it is too late! The looks aren't bad , though it pretty much looks like the Durango front end . Hopefully they have fixed the balljoint issue , don't know why they think they have to have non greasable joints when the greased versions were much more durable.

I agree with the gauges. The auto companies have been slowly taking the gauges away. I think the only car you can get full gauges in now is a Corvette. I like the full gauges. But if you can save 20 buxs a truck by removing gauges then they will do it.

Now my compliants.

No HEMI. Wont fit? All I need is a cutting torch and a welding machine.

The OD gear ration for the 6-speed manual tranny is taller than the OD for the automatic? Make that .79 5th gear and give me a real OD gear where I barely turn 2k at 75 mph.

What is up with that front bumper? Is that chrome strip taped on? A sawzall and real metal would fix that problem.

Overall I like it. I might put one in my driveway.

I like it all except for two things. I *hate hate hate* those tail lights. Our Liberty has something similar and they're just dumb looking (to me). I like the headlights being clear and huge, but hate where the radio / temp guages are. I don't like people touching my temp stuff unless *I* tell them they can. It being in the center is just like, "Hey even though I'm freezing b/c I just got back in the truck but you've been here for the entire time, you can control it if you're hot." When in all actuality I would say, "I'm cold. If you don't like it open your window."

Finally I have absolutely NO problem with the Voltage / Oil pressure removals, BUT if I was *really* into doing stuff w/ the truck (I.E.- tricking it out with engine boosters, huge stereos, etc.) then I'd look into getting something other than this truck year. Just my opinions, though ;)

Might as well say I hate the whole truck, I'll just take the mone that I could buy a 2005 Dakota with, and just rebuild my 97 back up from the ground, with more power, and better performance than this 2005 Dakota can offer.

But it looks like a full size RAM that they squeezed out of a bottle, too sleek looking for a truck. But thats just me, i don't want to drive around in something that looks like the Bat Mobile Truck, I want something that looks like it actually has a pair.

Just my 2 cents though :(

I find it very funny that this truck looks a lot like other trucks that a lot of Dodge guys bash!

This is what I mean:
1. From the side, the cab (especially the back doors, looks like the Silverado crew cab coming out later this year.
2. From the side, the front and rear fenders look like the Nissan Titan,
3. The back of the truck reminds me of the new Toyota Tundra stepside, mainly because of the tail lights.
4. The front looks like a new Durango.

I'm guessing that the Durango influence is probably going to make this new Dakota less capable off road because the approach angle, departure angle, and overall ground clearance are very poor on the new Durango.
No Hemi? Same ball joints? No manual tranny for the v-8? I thought the new Dakota might tempt me to give Dodge a second chance, but I was wrong.

While other companies can survive and thrive under control of another company, Daimler has completely squelched the creative soul that used to be Chrysler. The flowing lines of Tom Gale shall be no more. No slab sided Daimler designs for me, please!

I was a Chrysler Corporation customer on principle. The support for those principles is gone, and the new product is proving it.

I won't be a prospect for any of the new Daimlerized products. For the first time in 25 years, I will go elsewhere next time. If I'd have wanted a Mercedes or Mitsubishi, I'd have bought one! It's only gonna get worse from this point forward, I'm very sorry to say! The "Merger" has changed the landscape tremendously. Even the most loyal Die Hard will have to admit that soon!

People adapt to change in different ways. Some take the path of least resistance. Others move on to different territory. Hopefully both find happiness.

The former Chrysler Corporation understood that the path to growth was retaining current customers and attracting new ones, both at the same time. The comments on this board do not reassure me that this new Dakota will do both.

The cast is set for many changes throughout the whole product lineup. The trucks are probably the "luckiest" product line when it comes to force fed change. Try dropping sedans, introducing only a "Sport Tourer" (read wagon) and eliminating FWD. That is not an attempt to retain current customers by any stretch. This Dakota suffers mostly from a bad case of the boxies.

It's a miracle this truck is even here, because 18 months ago there were strong hints coming from Auburn Hills (read Stutgart) that the Dakota platform would be dropped entirely in favor of a smaller pickup. How would that have been accepted? That's really what could have happened and that's why our old friend Bob fast-tracked the Colorado over at his new hangout.

The bad part is obviously options, No Reg cab? NO HEMI? sheet!, These Daks must not be as popular as they used to be. the Rams are #1 sellers now. In 2 Year Everyone will love these things and all the cry babys will be wired shut. Personally I cant blame anyone for having loyalty for Dodge I have owned and worked for everyone of the Big 3, Ford is worthless Trash, and GM is sloppy. Dealer told me 4x4 was full time now on all models. Another reason I grabbed an '04.

You must have been mislead, 4x4 is not full-time on all models. Better find a dealer that knows what's going on!

New styling takes a while to get used to. I't will take me awhile to get used to it, but its growing on me. I did notice:
1. The club cab gets the small rear doors, not sure I like this yet, I kind of like the extended cab thats still a "2-door", but I guess the access would be better.
2. They went back to the 8.25 rear end, why? Also the dodge web site shows 3.21 axle ratio, isn't 3.55 low enough?
3. The whole interior is new, except it has the same floor console as my 02, what's up with that!
4. Black looks the best so far, I'll probably want one after one pulls up next to me at a traffic light, hopefully it will be a V6 so I can smoke it.

I saw my first one today--I noticed it on the dealer lot and stopped to have a look. Ugly. Dodge ruined a great-looking truck. The worst part, I thought, was the interior. Overall it looked too plastic, and I didn't like the seat fabric. The interior door design looks too square and boxy, like it's right out of 1973 or something--it doesn't go at all with the aerodynamic external body styling. The new Rams were sitting right next to it, and the Ram is absolutely the best looking truck on the road right now. I don't know why Dodge didn't keep the Dakota as the little brother of the Ram. Why did they have to go and Durango the Dakota the way they did? The only thing I liked about it was the metallic "Dakota" badge--it sure beats the stickers we have on our trucks.

I just rented a 2005 dakota due to the fact that I blew my rear end twice this month. well I am not impressed at all. The exterior is absolutly horrendous to many sharpe lines trying to blend in with curves, and the interior is very blah, the gages are nice but re using the center console from the last gen is tacky. It has the 3.7 and it blows, no power or torque at all, but i blame that on the auto. the 3.9 on a stick is more fun to drive. The only thing I liked about it is the new suspension and the stock stereo is decent. Other than that I am very dissapointed in dodge releasing the dakota looking like that, it makes the gmc cannon look a million times better.

Well, I test drove the 05 Dak and the 04 F150 Lariat. I loved the way the dodge drove (very powerful, smooth, and VERY quest!). But the Lariat surpassed it in many ways. MANY more standard options, and much more towing/payload (10,000 towing). I cancelled my Dak order and purchase a fully loaded 04 F150 Lariat. I still love my 01 Dak, and would love to have the 05 Dak, but the price and available options finaly made up my mind.

Just checked out an '05 Dakota today...no seat in the middle of the club cab, no underseat storage, and the club cab windows don't even vent open. Pretty lame.

I got my fully (I mean fully) loaded '04 4x4 QC. I finally saw on '05 4x4 at the dealership and it was quite a letdown.
