Subject: Bad Fan Clutch or worse?
IP: Logged

Message:
I would like anyone's opinion on this. I have a 2000 CC4.7L manual truck that seems to be having some issues as of yesterday with the fan and/or fan clutch. If the fan clutch went bad on me would it cause the fan to run non-stop at any RPM, which is what is happening, or could it be something else? I noticed some Power Steering fluid on the belt and will be replacing that tommorrow(the belt). Just wondering if it may be linked or something worse. any helpful advice appreciated. Thanks.

Are you sure it's power steering fluid? The fan clutch has a viscous fluid in it and if it all leaked out the clutch could seize and cause it to run at all rpm's like you're experiencing.

If the engine is running, the mechanical fan will run too. The whole point of a viscous clutch is to allow the engine to spin up more quickly without turning the fan into a propeller. Do you have an aux. electric fan, and is the fan that's running constantly?

No, I'm not sure if it was power steering fluild I just assumed it was since I spilled some when I filled it last week. But it has seized up and runs non-stop. I guess my next question would be can I just remove the fan and install a 185 degree thermostat, which I have already, and be done with it?
And to answer the other question, yes it does have an aux. electric fan, but from what I've read on here it only comes on once the water temp hits 195 degrees.

There's been a lot of debate over keeping the mech fan or not. Personally, I feel the need to keep such redundant cooling, but others feel the free hp (less than 10) is worth it. Kinda depends on where you live and how you use it. The deal is usually gonna let the truck run up closer to 195 more often in low-speed situations. What people tend to overlook is where the power to run the electric fan comes from. When not running, obviously, you'll have a few free hp, but when it kicks in, the power has to come from somewhere, and that'd be the electrical system. And what happens when the demand loads up the alternator? It loads up the engine with increased demand, and it's hp that drives it all, so you're back to square one. Me, I'd keep the mech. for general street use. Opinions vary.

The 4.7, already has an electric fan. NO need to install another one.

Just take of the entire belt clutch/fan, and be done with it. I'm not going to go into now, you'll have to read the archives, via a search.

Bottom line, get rid of it, and if anything else at all, install a 180 t-stat, that's it.

Yes, I did this years ago. TX heat, towing, etc., temp gauge never gets to half way. It runs a little cooler thatn it did with my stock 195, AND the belt clutch/fan!

If you feel so inclined about keeping it, go for it, throwing away torque and hp.

Hauling up the bullshlt flag on this thread.

gen1dak,

the logic you just employed is the same logic somepeople use to operate their vehicles with the headlights off and the heater off. It's a falacy to assume that the electric fan "loads up the alternator". It doesn't. The greatest source of current on any vehicle is the battery. The alternator is there to charge the battery.

Above 15mph the mechanical fan is a waste of metal. Ram air at most speeds is enough to cool the engine, certainly at highway speeds. Loose the fan clutch and fan and put a pusher on that engages at 180 and you're OK. And don't worry about electrical load using more gas. It can't.
