Subject: HEADLIGHT (high/low beam) PROBLEM

Message:
I hope someone can help me here.
Recently, on my 1997 5.2 4x4 CC Dakota, my headlights, after have being on for a while, begin to rapidly flicker from High to Low beam, if I cut them off for a few seconds, then turn them back on, they're ok, for a few minutes, then it starts all over again. Last year, I tried the little wiring trick that allows you to have your High beams on, along with your fog lights, well, it didn't work for me so I taped everything back up. A few weeks after that, my headlight on/off switch burned out, and a black wire was smoldering. I taped the black wire up with electrical tape, replaced the on/off switch, $12.00, and it was fine. This past December in '03, I installed a remote starter, along with a set of Xenon bulbs. The lights flickered with the Xenon bulbs, so I put the regular bulbs back in. And now I still have the same problem, and have to limit my night driving. I also replaced the Steering column Combination switch ($60) in January '04, and that didn't fix it. Replaced the fuse today, and still have the same problem. Other than the bulb connectors that the bulbs plug into, (I checked those out, and they seem fine), is there anything at all I should check/replace to hopefully fix this problem? From the little things with the High Beam and fog light trick, Remote Starter, or Xenon bulbs that I installed or tried, could that have an effect on it? Has any one ever heard of this type of problem? Where should I take it to have it checked out if needed? I really appreciate any help given.

I had a similar problem but it was with the turn signals.
Mine would blink for a while then go to hazard for a while.
I tried to replace the flasher unit but none where available for resale.
I had to take it to the dealer and have them change it out.
The High low switck is very similar and could be going out. That is the first place I would look.

As far as the xenon bulbs go, I have been running them for over a year now with no problems.

check the relay and switch for your high low beams and I think you will find your problem.

good luck.

Don't know how the 1997 headlights are powered, but I have resisted putting higher wattage bulbs in my 2001 or making any direct modifications.

The factory service manual shows the headlights in the 2001 models are not powered by the standard relay method, but DIRECTLY form the computer which has semiconductor drivers in it.

I was considering some of those higher wattage Super White bulbs, but the vendor doesn't supply the relay harness any longer that would isolate the computer circuitry from the higher load. The truck wiring would operate teh relay in the harness and power was from the battery via a fuse.

Is it a manual transmission truck? Do the 1997's fall under the lighting wiring rubbing the clutch linkage recall?

Thank both of you for your insight, where should I look for a relay at? I thought of that too, but not sure where it would be located, and it is an auto transmission.
