My water pump on my 99 Dakota (V6 3.9) went out Saturday. Is there a way to get the fan off the water pump pulley (is there a way to keep the pulley from spinning so the fan can be removed with the water pump still attached)? Any tips?

The way I was able to do this was to use the holes in the pulley. I placed a machiene screw through a hole and grabbed the threaded end with a pair of vice grips. The vicegrips attached to the screw catches on the various necks and won't allow the pulley to turn. You can then use a cresent wrench to remove the fan clutch.

When I replaced the water pump on my 94 3.9 i used an air chisel with a point end and vibrated that big nut loose by puting the point on the edge of the nut just give it a couple of short shots it should come loose. To get the lower clamp off the by pass hose I used a needle nose vise grip to compress it(bought a cheap one at AID Auto). The AC compressor can be hung to the pass side of the eng comp DONT remove hoses there is enough slack to move the unit aside. My only regret is not doing the timing chain and tensioner refit at that time but it was febuary in new york so now im looking at $ 500 plus at the dodge dealer because at 108K miles ive got that chain slapping inside the case.I asked the service manager at the Dodge dealer and he said a lot of owners are living with the slap??Its got me nervise any one else concer with this ? my Email is (qlty@webtv.net) I would appreciate any input on this as well as any other info regarding a V6 dakota Ive done a few other fixes on it and would be glad to share any info i can
RE: brakes, auto trans, heater fan resistor, cruse control& horn fix, rear brake adjuster problems (unsolved)JMHOP but the timing chain slap at 90K miles deservises a class action law suit
