Subject: 89 4X4 5spd trans???

hey guys...

My 89 3.9L V6, 4x4, which has been bullet proof for me finally had a problem. The trans - a 5spd...I'm not sure which model # it would be, finally left ALL of its fluid on the ground.

It's the strangest thing the fluid poors out of it like a fountain. Since its a manual I thought this was pretty weird. Anyway, the oil is coming from a passage way all the way at the back of the trans on teh driver's right. It's a machined hole, but no threads or anything. Before I just try to seal it back up, I was wondering if anybody knew what the heck this passage way is for. Or better yet where I might be able to find a graphic diagram of the trans?

thanks....jason

You have a NP2500 trans. The only things for the drivers side it could be is the drain plug, back up light switch, or a plug where the speedometer gear would go on a 2 wheel drive. I couldn,t find any decent pictures of the passenger side. I got all this out of my 88 Dakota factory service manual. The 88s are the exact same as the 89s. I have an 89 with the same drivetrain you do. Let know how you turn out.

I have an 88 dakota 3.9 5sp manual. I have tranny fluid all over the transmission. I have no idea where to fill it and with what and how much. Can anyone help me out on this one? Also my father seems to think my knockoff rod is going out. Can anyone tell me about that?
