Subject: 5.2 starting trouble and dying...HELP

Help!!

My 5.2 is recently having troubles starting after it has been running. It will start and rev to about 1000 rpm and then just immediatly die. It only does it after it has recently been driven. It will start and run perfectly in the morning, but as soon as I get to where Im going, turn it off and restart, it has its problem. Also, if Im driving along and I take my foot off of the gas, it has the tendancy to lower in rpms all the way to zero. This is frustrating because I have to hurry and flip it into neutral and restart. It usually wants to die after that so I have to keep one foot on the brake and one foot on the gas. It is not bad gas because I have had multiple tanks through it. Any help is greatly appreciate!!

Jason

My truck did the exact same thing. I cleaned the throttle body and it never died again.

it may ecm related. if its a problem when warm but not cold it sounds like the "open-loop" operation is working. but when the sensors tell the computer to shift into "closed-loop" mode things go bad.

do you get a check engine light? if so, you need to check the codes. if no light i still think its closed-loop related but i have no ideas.

Never got an engine light. I thought it might be a problem with maybe the wires, but I was headed to the injectors or computer next. As for the throttle body, I periodically run through the carb/injector cleaner and it seems to help a little, but this time, no improvement. Thanks for all of your suggestions and more are welcome!

My 99 did the same thing. The throttle body was all crudded up and the IAC was not working right. After cleaning the TB a little and installing the new IAC, it worked fine again.

Nuke,
You should get a new TB gasket from DC, take off the TB (be careful to slide off the 2 clips not pop off), get some CRC TB cleaner spray and a toothbrush. clean it good. If u'r not getting a check engine light this is probably the problem. How many miles you got? I do this every once in a while just for maintenance on my 5.2, so I won't have a problem. My wife's camaro used to do the same thing till I started cleaning her TB.

It looks like cleaning the TB is the first thing I should try. I have a little over 122K on her and I know the TB has never been off. Thanks for the input. I really appreciate it. I hate to just go replacing things hoping it will fix it. It won't take much to clean the TB though. Thanks to everyone for all of the suggestions.

The gasket's like $5, get a coulpe spares too. taking the whole TB off lets you really clean it and won't harm your belly pan gasket, like just leaving it on and spraying down into the manifold. I'd clean that thing like every 30,000 or sooner, you're long overdue, hope this helps!

Cleaned out the TB today. It went as easy as cake. As far as I can tell, I think it may have solved the probem. I also took out the IAS and cleaned it off too. It was filled with dirt. While I was in there, I decided to change over the cap and rotor since it had never been done before either. Oh well, thanks for all of the input; I really appreciate it!
