I can’t figure out where the rust is coming from, does anyone have any ideas. It is clogging the injectors causing everything from bad gas mileage to random backfires. I keep cleaning the injectors, until I can find the cause of the problem.

are you buying all of your fuel from the same place? it may be coming from the gas pump when you fill up.

if so, try switching suppliers.

other than that i'm stumped. the tank is plastic. the pump i believe is stainless (no rust). the line from the pump to the fuel rail is rubber. the connector tube between left & right rails is rubber (i think). only the rails & the injectors themselves are metal.

how often do you drive the truck? if its not driven regularly maybe the rust is occuring within the rails when it sits.

that sucks

Thats a shiddy problem. What year is your truck? If it has the fuel filter on the frame rail, I believe those were made of steel, and could be rusting! I could be wrong, but if it is rusted on the engine side of the filter, rust could be getting to your fuel rails. If it is in the tank, your filter should catch it. Good luck, let us know if you find out.

It's the fuel rail. It's probably made out of pot metal (steel) and using ethanol makes it rust. I had to replace the fuel rails on my 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 3.7 liter SOHC V-6 VIN "K" with stainless steel fuel rails from a Jeep. Of course Dodge denies there is any problem.
