Subject: Older 3.9 loses power while warming up..

Hello, everyone.

I have a 1996 Dakota SLT, Extended Cab, 2WD truck with the Automatic Transmission. There are now 125,000 very reliable miles on it. Really, in the years I've owned it, there have been virtually no major problems with the truck, and I'm very satisfied with it.

Over about the last year (in winter), I have noticed that my truck will lose power during warmup (in the subfreezing air we have in upstate New York nowadays). I'm pretty sure that it's a fuel problem, because I have heard the unburned gas "pop" out the tailpipe from the catalytic converter.

The problem rarely happens when I'm driving the truck from a cold state, but happens almost entirely when I drive the truck after it has been sitting off for a little while (after a complete warmup).

I'll be driving along, and the truck simply loses power, with that weird feeling of holding the accelerator steady but the vehicle RPMs start to die and the truck gets slower. It comes back after I hold the accelerator down and rev it a few times. The engine does not stall from this. Just loses power.

I put in a new distributor cap and rotor recently (old one was actually quite clean and fine - I saved them), but that did not solve the problem. Plug wires and plugs are all okay.

Not a horrible problem, but a little annoying at times. Thanks in advance for your replies. I appreciate it.

- Rob J

try cleaning your throttle body out and make sure the IAC gets clean as well. if that doesnt help you might have a catalaic converter going bad...just a thought...

I am having a some what similar problem. Im not happy to say ive replaced the fuel filter, pump, crank position sensor, o2 sensor, cleaned throtle body and IAC, all with no luck. The last thing im going to try is to clean/replace fuel injectors. What a big waste of money. The good news is i got so frusterated that im going to just buy a brand new truck. Not really good news :)

I'd be willing to bet your problem is a plugged
catalytic converter. You said you hear "pop" from
that area. That is a sign of overheating.

Have it checked. No big deal to replace plus at
125000 miles, it is normal.

Let me know what you find out.

Could also be the injectors like they said. A buddy of mine has aan old 93 and thAt thing loads up so bad sometimes it looks like a damn diesel, but he just drives it. It has like 300k on that lil 3.9 and he has never done anything to it but tune it up, and he drives it like 30 miles to and from work everyday. He bought it new in 92 and refuses to part with it. Anyhow if its loading up ( clogged of stuck injector) that could do it too.

99% of the time if your unit loads up and looks
like a diesel going down the road, there is
something *telling* the computer to give it more
gas. I would change my O2 sensor before I'd start
replacing injectors.

I still think Rob J in WNY has a plugged
converter.

The filter is in the tank along with the pump.

How long do you let your truck idle before you start out on the road? I usealy let my 318 about 20 min to warm up depending on the temp and windchill outside.

I have a '92 dak and it has an in-line fuel filter underneath the driverside door. I also replaceed my cat, it was pretty messed up but it didn't fix the problem, niether did replacing the o2 sensor. Like I said, my last chance is the fuel injectors, but i live i michigan and right now it's too damn cold to work on my truck. :) Has anyone ever had problems w/ their PCM? Just wondering if that might be a problem.

the temp sensor can cause this, telling the computer its colder or warmer then it is,

causing the pcm to lean or richin the fuel

$10-15 for sensor

its near the thermostat housing
