Subject: Tailgate Lock
IP: Logged

Message:
I'm really interested in getting a tailgate lock to secure my stuff while skiing, atv riding, or any other time i put things back there.

I already ruled out the Bully lock, it looks really cheap and from what i'm reading on past threads its not very good. I'm not sure about the pop&lock. I like the electric ones but I dont have power locks, do these power locks have a key with them so i dont have to hook up the power part? Any imput is appreciated and I hope to order this lock (whichever one it may be) ASAP.

Thanks,
~Matt

What do you have for a bed cover? If it's a cap, then that would probably be your weak link. Caps with a seperate locking handle on each side are a lot stronger. If the locking handle is in the center, then it usually only takes a sharp tug on the handle to get it open.

If you have a secure cap or locking bed cover, then a simple gate bolt on the inside of the tailgate is really all you need. If you put one on each side, you'de have to destroy the tailgate to get it open.

I have the Extang RT tonneau cover...you need to have the tailgate opened to get to the little latch that releases the cover from being locked to its frame...if you undo the side of the cover it is too tight and you could bairly get a skinny arm underneath it, so no you cant open it w/out the gate down. I know if someone really wanted to get in they could cut my cover, but no matter what if a theif wanted to get in, they could.

I want a tailgate lock to turn away the average joe who would open ur gate and take $hit for an easy steal. I'm in high school so there are always the jerkoffs that enjoy messing with other peoples stuff (especially when you have a nice shiny dak sitting there compared to their POS that smells like weed or whatever else they waste their money smoking in it), or likewise in a ski resort parking lot, MX track, etc.

So in conclusion...any tailgate lock similar to and including the Pop&Lock, that actually work? Or even an electric one w/a key so i can skip the electric part?

Thanks again,
~Matt

P.S - I want to restate that i'm in highschool = limited on cash! So if you could please include a link with the cheapest price, that would be greatly appreciated.

I have an electric tailgate lock.
I looked foreve for a combo electric with a key override.
It does not exist.
the electric is nice but cost about $70.
you could rig a switch to it to lock and unlock from the cab.

I would just get the poplock they are bretty good.
If want a custom solution you could relocate the gate handle to the inside and shave the outside.

good luck.

Take a look at your tailgate towards the top, above the latch, and look at the corrasponding surface of the bed. You'll see how close these two surfaces are. Go down to the key shop, and find a HD bolt style cabinet lock. It works like the bolt on the front door of your house. All it would need would be 1/4" to 3/8" bolt; it takes a lot of torque to shear a 1/4" bolt. Mount it in the tailgate up in that area and drill a hole in the side of the bed for it to match with. It's a pretty tight fit there, so make sure you can get your fingers and the parts up there to assemble it. I would probably drill a 1 1/2" or so access hole on the inside of the tailgate, where it wouldn't show, then rivet a cover plate over it.
