C'mon boys, help me out here. Dodge says 16 city and 19 hwy on my 2000 4.7L club cab?!?! BULLS%$*!!!! I drive some city and some highway and get about 14.0 MPG. I've tried babying it, I've tried getting on it... MPG doesn't change.

Just remember that it's not Dodge who rates the mileage, it is the EPA...the same people who said it was safe to live near the Love Canal in NY. In my opinion, their mileage figures are still inflated despite their downward revision of ratings 10 or so years ago. Dodge could probably build the 4.7 to live up to its EPA ratings, but it would probably have about 170 HP and a redline of 4200 RPM. Conversely, I could probably get 14 in town if I never touched the gas pedal. I'll live with my 13 city/16-17 highway in spite of the EPA estimate of 14/19 for my truck.

Maybe the EPA does their testing facing downhill.

My truck got crappy mileage until I got some miles on it.. then I added a cover and K&N.. now I do great. I have a 5.2, but I would think a 4.7 should do better as you get more miles on it

The sticker on my 2000 4.7 Club Cab listed 14 city and 19 highway. I'm not sure of the city mileage although it doesn't seem very good but it gets about 17 on the main roads at 55-60.

I have the 4.7 in a CC with the auto, 3.55 gears, 31" tires, and HD suspension and stuff and I get 18 on average and 20 if I do 80 consistantly. I have done a Borla cat-back exhaust, Airaid intake filter system, and the Airaid TB spacer. I do have almost 24000 miles thought. It did get better as I got more miles. Other than that I don't know what to tell you. I am not a lead foot and I don't always baby it.

Mine says 16 city 27 highway with 2WD reg cab and 5 speed. I find if I shift very quickly thru the gears at around 1,500 rpm's to keep the RPM's down I do get great gas milage. This truck drinks way more than my 5.2 CC 4X4 did if the running high rpm's. Ususally if I am cruisng I shit into 5th at around 40mph if it's flat and the needle doesn't even move then. It also getting better now that I have close to 3,000 miles on it.

My 4.7 4X4 is broken in now..got about 10k on it, and it gets around 18mpg highway, still al lstock parts. I found the nice ol' trick of leaving the tailgate down can get me 19 easy. Very easy. Can't wait to get some K&N and a Gibson on it...

Universities have done extensive research on the "tailgate down" theory. They have found that leaving the tailgate down actually increases drag on our daks by 6%. The only thing that decreased drag from tailgate up was a tonneau cover. With the tailgate up you create a large air bubble in your bed which allows air to flow more effeciently over your bed. With the tailgate down you break the air bubble and break up the airflow over your cab creating more drag.

just got my 4x4 Sport/QC/4x4/4.7/auto/T&H/
3.92LSD last week. got about 500 miles on it
so far.

even with the engine still tight (only 500
miles), and 3.92 gears, i still manage to get
an easy 18mpg on the highway at a 75mph
cruise. all completely stock.

people seem to think 3.92's are *much*
worse for MPG....little secret...they're NOT...
with the 3.92 gears, engine doesn't have to
labour as much it seems (factor of higher
torque multiplication).

I'm sure that when I get a couple thousand
miles racked up, i'll be at 20mpg @75mph no
problem.

I did find that mileage only truly gets decent
(17-18) when the torque converter locks up. if
for some reason (incline, heavy foot, etc.) the
converter isn't allowed to lock, then i can see
why you'd be hard pressed to get more than
14mpg, 'cause that's what it's at in mine until it
jumps up to 17-18 (after converter locks up no
doubt).

it'll all in how you drive 'em...

cheers,
Luc

Check this site for the real deal on tailgates, tonneau covers, caps, etc. as it relates to aerodynamics. Understand however that city mileage is not going to be affected all that much by aerodynamics. Highway mileage will be greatly affected.

http://mars.acnet.wnec.edu/~ehaffner/did.htm

Naturally, my cap provides the largest increase in drag. Hence my lousy mileage.

The info on the website about aerodynamics states that with the tailgate down drag is decreased, but with the tailgate removed, drag is increased. So mileage would improve with a lowered tailgate. I would have to agree with that from prior experience also. It makes on average about a 1 mpg difference I would guess.

Thanks for that link Dan!
Looks like the best way to improve mileage is to build an angled topper :o The
smooth, "egg" shape is the most aerodynamic and logically gives the lowest drag.
Lower drag = better mileage

5.2, auto, 3.55, club cab, 1995, and I get 16 city on 40-45MPH streets and 21 freeway (at 75mph average). So just what did we gain going to the 4.7? I heard they did that for better gas mileage to make the EPA happy and got added performance as a bonus, but now I am not so sure.
Can the 4.7 tow like a 5.2?

Same crap here lilbigrig. Hoping to get it back when I get it flashed at Mike Leach. I have heard good things about it. I have my 180 stat in now to reduce chance of detonation with the upped timing. I am getting 16 now that it's warmer(combined city/hwy). I get 17 or so strictly highway. Gotta keep it under 80. Hahhhaa.

I know it is sometimes tough to get good fuel economy.....especially when you are having fun.. The 4.7 will do good when you get to OD and let the computer feed the engine in a "lean" mode. 20+ mpg. Otherwise accept that recreation has it's price.
