So my heat went out 2 days agp, which didn't make me too happy since i live in Michigan and its freakin freezing.. Yesterday, I was on the highway and my check engine light came on. Looked down, engine was running about 255 F. Pulled over and turned the car off. waited a little bit, turned back on, same problem. So I had to get it towed. I'm thinking it's the thermostat, but i have no freakin clue.. antifreeze.. Anyone have any ideas what it could be??

A friend of mine had the same problem with his 95 Neon, constantly overheating. Mt. Clemens Dodge told him the pin on the thermostat was bent and they'd need to replace it. After they switched it out, it was fixed.

It's probably a coolant leak, either a pinhole in the radiator or a cracked hose. That would explain both the heat loss two days ago and the boilover today.

P.S. poor college student tip:

You can limp around by filling the radiator but leaving the cap off. That way the coolant system won't build up pressure as the engine heats up. Keep a couple gallons of premixed antifreeze in the truck and refill the radiator when your heat starts to go out.

Thermostat is relatively easy and cheap to fix... a good back up when doing this is to drill a small hole in the new thermostat... if it gets stuck coolant can still get through although slower... but should prevent overheating. Learned that from a mechanic.

I guess it was a bad water pump. My buddy at the dealer diagnosed it and said the water pump went bad and started spraying coolant everywhere. I replaced the water pump and some belts. Its running normal now. And I have heat! Thanks for the tips.
