I've got a line on a 3.9L engine and 5 speed manual trans from a wrecked '98 Dakota. I'm wondering what other vehicles this might fit right into. I'm looking to put together a running vehicle as inexpensively as possible, so it needs to be a straight swap, no expensive modifications to make it work.

The easiest vehicle to place your engine and transmission would be another 98 dakota set up to use a 5 speed for the transmission.
Any other swap would not be "straight."
You can always try to find another Gen III Dakota to swap everything into. A Ram would work also.
Either way you have set yourself up for quite a project.
