Subject: Code re-programming?
IP: Logged

Message:
Has anyone been told by their Dodge dealer that removing power will cause the program to blank out in their truck, and it will have to be re-done by the dealer? They told me that even just changing the battery will require a re-programming to ensure correct shift-points, idle quality, etc. That kind of got my goat. I wrenched quite a bit on my '91 5.0 Mustang, (for cool bolt-ons and tuning, not because it EVER broke down), and it only took five minutes after restoring power for the computer to re-learn it's idle characteristics. (I had a 5 spd., so shift points were moot!) Same thing when I changed the timing belts on my ex's LeBaron...give it a few minutes, and it programs itself. I have heard that the new computers kind of learn your driving habits, but I can't believe that you would have to fork out props to the dealer just because your battery puked. What gives? I've owned Fords (just trucks and Mustangs) for years, and decided to go to Dodge in '98 with my 4x4 Dak, since I grew up riding in Dodges, like '66 Charger R/T, '69 Superbee etc. (these were the family cars), and I missed the sound of the high-torque starters!

The code that starts and runs the engine, runs the ignition and fuel systems, etc. is stored on non volatile memory. It stays there until it is actively replaced (flashed) even if voltage is removed.

The adaptive portions of the programming, idle quality, shift quality, etc. are stored on volatile memory and are lost as soon as voltage is removed.

I think the dealer is full of it because your truck will "re-learn" what is lost. IMHO the dealer is hosing you.

Thanks Spiller. I can't believe a supposed 5-star dealer would stoop to clip-joint tactics like that, but I had a feeling it was wrong. The sensor went out on my trans after three years, and it never did shift right from new, so I tried to re-set the computer by disconnecting the battery for a few, like I would have on the Ford's EEC IV; not that I ever had to. The service manager freaked, said you should NEVER unhook the battery, and if you changed it there was no choice but to pay them the $80 to hook up for re-programming. I did stumble across the easy way to access codes for the Dak here, but it seems as if my '98 has been left out?? Tried it, didn't work. The guage cluster test was okay, but that's not really the heavy stuff I'd like to see. Is it true that '97 and '98 are the only years you can't do this? It would have come in handy for that bad sensor, I think. Thanks again for the help. It's refreshing to come across someone who has something to offer of substance, instead of just cheerleading or cynical bashing.

That 5 star nonsense is just another sales gimmick from what I've seen. If the truck won't hold an idle after disconecting power just give it a little gas for a few minutes and it should re-learn on its own. I believe the key trick for diagnostics is for '99 up, don't know about all the older models.

Ive had my battery disconnected probably 20 times for various upgrades to the motor and have never had a problem with any kind of malfunction of any sort. Starts and runs perfect.I would write a letter to Dodge and inform them of this scam artists advice so that no one else gets ripped off.

Hello, Kowalski? I know you can hear me. The main doors, and even some side doors of those 5-star dealerships are embellished with fuzzy frills. So be careful! Seriously, my first car was a '70 Challenger; a 318 with peeling paint in 1979, but I loved it. I had a '70 440 Sixpack Challenger R/T that I restored the rolling chassis on about ten years ago, but I never got it finished. I loved my 5.0 Mustang LX, but if Dodge was still building a Challenger the way Ford was going with the 'Stang, I would have gone for the Dodge back in '91. Hey, I knew you made it past the bulldozers...I have "Vanishing Point", (the original), and you can clearly see the white Camaro they wrecked at the end of the movie...so I knew you and the Challenger lived on. Thanks for letting loose of your pistol-grip shifter long enough to give me a reply.
