Subject: Question on ball joints
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a question or two about this ball joint
problem.

1) Is this problem only for Dakota and Durango?

2) What about the full size Ram, Van and Mini Van?

3) Is this problem for 2X4 units only or does it
also include 4X4's?

It's hard to believe the problem would only be
for Dakota and Durango. I would figure those ball
joints would be used in all their units including
the cars.

Thanks for reading and I'll be looking for
replys.

Well the ball joint problem is the upper ball joints. The reason is that they have no grease fitting and if there is grease in them it makes its way out or water gets in there are wears them out. The Ram has the ungreasable ball joints to but I have not heard of any problems with those yet.

It seems most late model vehicles are using non greasable ball joints these days. Why? I really cant understand that. I would think that all vehicles need to have all steering components checked by (a competent mechanic) on regular basis.

As for vehicle specific problems on mini vans I havent really heard to much because I dont drive one. I have of heard of the same problem with full size trucks of all types. Maybe it is more relavent to trucks and heavier vehicles that put more stress on the balljoints.

As for the new Ram I had a look under one awhile ago and got a surprise! NON greasable Balljoints that apear to be casted into an aluminum control arm. This would make for an very expensive replacement as the old balljoint could not replaced with an aftermarket one. You would be forced to buy a the complete assembly from dodge again, with the non greasable ball joint.

I have found a way to get some grease into those non greasable ball joints (injection needle through the rubber boot) but it really isn't the best way.
The obove statements are only my opinions make your own conclusions.
