I thought that would get some attention. I just went to purchase some Autolite 3923's for my 98 5.2. When they didn't come up on his recommended list (he wanted to sell me 54 something which were the same price) he seemed to indicate that with such a low heat rating, engine damage is a possibility. My feeling is that he had his head where the sun doesn't shine, but wanted to get a little input. Why would lowering the heat rating be a concern? I'm in Colorado so we're in a higher elevation. I don't know if that would make a difference. Also, on this board, I've mostly heard of the 3923s on 4.7s or 3.9s, not much said about them on a 5.2. I feel I need to do something to my truck, my father has a 2001 offroadster with the 360 and he's been spending money on it. I can't let that big lubering truck beat my baby. Thanks.

I have a 5.2 (this is my second) and they are just as good on the 5.2 as on the 5.9.

Where in CO are you? I was born and raised in Colo. Springs.

I'm in Lakewood. I am a CO native as well. When you bought your plugs did they try and steer you away from them at all?

I'm no expert but by using the 3923's you are putting a slightly "shorter" plug in (VERY slightly increases the chamber size) and going 1 temp range cooler in the chamber. This effectivly reduces the tendancy to ping and makes the engine run better. This is both my experience and most others I believe.

I wouldn't listen to them, if they owned a Dakota and had problems fine, but most likely they don't. Their dumb terminal just tell them what to say. Yes the Autolite 5442 or something like that number is what it comes stock in the truck. The 3923 are crossed referenced an will work just fine! So far they work good, they seem much better built that the Champions it had in there before.
Funny thing is I used to run them in my 1987 GTA a few years back! I happen to find a few used ones in my tool box. LOL

I sure appreciate the input. I figured the guy didn't really know what he was talking about. He said something about the sensors not being set up or something. My mechanical knowledge is minimal and I'm not really sure what he meant. Is there anyone out there who has had bad experience with these plugs? So far, everything I've heard on this board has been positive.

I put a set in my 4.7 and didn't like the way it felt. Sounded a bit different and felt like i lost some power. So i put the stock champions back and it feels better. I don't have much knowledge of these things so I don't know what was really going on. just based on feel.

Adam, the 4.7 has mixed results with 3923s.

Manuel, same thing, their "box" told them what to get but I said I wanted 3923s so they guy said ok.

They are a slightly shorter plug so the ceramic tip doesn't retain as much heat (doesn't stick out as far), less likely to pre-ignite. That is not the best answer but easy to visualize.

I did see that they were slightly shorter. I can judge the performance for myself, $10 isn't a big deal just though I would check into what he said about engine damage, since I'm no expert. I've actually been using a lower heat plug on my dirt bike and it starts quicker, runs better and costs less. I have the bosch +4s on right now. It sounds like those are hit and miss. I really didn't feel any performance gains over what it had before, but I haven't had any of the problems talked about either. Thanks for all the advise.

i went down to schucks (kragen, checkers) last weekend to get a new set of autolites. had been running the 5442 and wanted to give the 3923s a shot. well had to argue with the guy at the counter that insited that "any engine" made in the last ten years or so "required" plat plugs. i insisted on plain vanilla copper and got quite a bit of attitude. then he really hit the roof when i asked for the 3923- said i would seriously damage my engine.. so i told him that since he felt knew more about my truck than i did i should probably buy my plugs somewhere else and walked out. had to go across town to napa who only had the friggin 5442s in stock. so here i am with the same old heat range plugs and a dislike for my local shucks counterman. oh well at least the dak runs like new again....

I have had the 3923's in my 4.7L for about 7K miles. They idle smoother than the factory Champions and seem to give better throttle response. I am going to be pulling my heads off soon, so I will get to see what my chambers look like. I'll let everyone know then. So far, so good. I like the 3923's.

I put them in my 92 dak CC 3.9L about 10K ago and even with the almost 120K on the truck at that time it made a big difference. I'm curious however how much of it was also due to the 180 T-stat and due to those both being cooler than stock if they work together. Mine smoothed the accelleration, idle and even smoothed my exhaust note a bit(not as much popping at higher revs). I like them. My local parts guy didn't know what I drove. I just walked in and said I'd like a set of 6 Autolite 3923s and he was happy just to not have to look anything up on the computer.

My father went to Napa and bought an oil filter for his "Mazda Diesel pickup". It cost him quite a penny.

The next time he went to Napa, he handed the guy the part number from the lid of the box of the previous filter and it cost him only half as much as the last time.

It would seem the price is based on the application rather than the part number.

I got the 3923s on my R/T. Works good for me. No real difference though. Couple months ago I indexed the plugs. When I pulled em out to do that , they looked as good as the day I bought em.
