Hello, I've just been browsing at mufflers. My 98 5.2 is totally stock. Can anyone confirm that this is a dual inlet single outlet? Also, how big of a difference in power will changing the muffler make? Also, I want one that will just bolt on, make as much power as possible. It would also be a bonus if it was loud and mean. Thanks for any advise.

I can't confirm on the Inlet/outlet. But I really like Spintech Mufflers. They have good flow, better than Flowmaster or Gibson. They also have mean sound. Try the Sport Truck SUV model. I used A spintech Sportsman Street XL #3436XL on my old 2000 Dakota R/T. It gave good performance, but was to quiet. I have heard the Sport Truck SUV #5436 and it sounded MEAN! Very loud! I would have gotten it If I had to chose again. Borla also makes very good mufflers. I have used a Borla before on my Dakota and It to gave good performance, but it was also to quiet. I have tried many Flowmaster Setups and they were all worse than the factory R/T exhaust.

Try Flo-Pro, they are a perforated flow through like Dynomax, have the same dimensions as a Flowmaster and not nearly the interior resonance the 40 series Flowmasters have.

dual in and single out? I have a 98 5.2 and mine was single in and out. I put on a single in dual out flowmaster 40.. love it.. IMHO, it isn't loud enough!
I have yet to experience any interior resonance in my cab with my 40 series. If you want interior resonance, sit inside a Stang with 40s at about 2200 rpm! That is 73mph, my cruising speed for interstates... that will give you headache! My Dak is way quiet compared to my Stang, interior wise.

I've got a 98' 5.2 4x4. Just recently(last week) put on a 40 series Flowmaster 3" in and two 2 1/2" out the back. I went to a shop that did mandrel bending. It sounds sweet, nice and throaty.

Manuel I have a custom Flo-Pro single 3" in single 3" out Catback and love it. Complete installation with a $50.00 stainless tip was only $350 CAN. (My research has shown this configuration to be best)
They are all welded joints however instead of clamps so can't be done at home but this makes for a supperior job. The rummble is very loud and can be felt in your seat but that's how I like it as does everyone that hears it.

I really appreciate the response. Jeffster, do you mean that the Flo Pro setup produced the best power gains? I really want it to scream when I punch it. Right now though, I don't have $350 and I am just looking to replace the stock muffler. Eventually I want to have a cat back installed, possible headers. Thanks again.

Well I don't know that much about mufflers but what I do know is you don't need any.I have a 99Dak/4x4 with a 5.2 and I had straight 3"pipe ran out the back no mufflers.The sound is deeper and more throaty than most I have heard with the same engine and mufflers.This is legal only if you leave the cadilitic converter alone.

Manuel, I had the Flo-Pro just cut in to replace the OEM muffler, it was $85 with a chrome tip installed. www.flopro.com is the address. I think Jeffster's was the Cat-back system.

99 Durango. Yes mine was a full cat back welded tight to the body of the cat so it looks like the cat is also 3" out. Eventually it will be continued 3" to the headers with high flow 3" in and 3" out cat once the intake side warrants it. All my research so far has pointed to 3" single out as being a perfect happy medium for this truck as apoused to dual exaust or dual Cat back.
Manuel I don't know about power gains. I don't want to say I gained X amount of power because I can't substantiate that. My gut feeling is yes but the tone alone makes it seem that way. I was also told that most of the rumble is produced by the 3" pipe not just the muffler so changing the muffler alone may not give the same tone. I love the very throaty sound and the very professional installation. I want an exaust that will be equal to the mod's I do up front on the engine in the future and this is it.

So the setup you have on your truck will accomidate headers easily? Thats perfect! Thats exactly what I want. Your suggestions have been very helpful and convinced me to wait until I can get a real start on the exhaust. Thanks to everyone who replied.

Has anyone bought or heard the borla 3" in and out stainless steel system for the dakota 4.7 V8.
How loud is it in the cab? Is is so loud that you can't have a conversation or is it a good deep rumble?

I had the Borla on my 4.7 and while it was a bit loud for me, it is quieter than most of the other performance mufflers. It made quite a noise when one got into it yet wasn't real bad at cruise. Quiet in the cab up to about 65-70 mph. A piece of advice, don't waste your money on the full catback system. Last I saw it was over $400 and the stock exhaust is a good quality all stainless mandrel bent system. As far as better performance with the 3" pipe, that won't happen on the 4.7 unless you make major mods to the engine such as a supercharger. I believe Ken Bell ran the 4.7 with no muffler beyond the cat and only acquired 1/2 hp. I will probably put my Borla on Ebay soon if u are interested.

What is the inlet, outlet measurement of a stock muffler on a 98 Dak 5.2L? I am considering replacement since it is 5 years old. Im planning to buy FloPro muffler in the near future. Can anyone help me out. Thanks.
