I am looking at a 99 dakota ext cab V-8 4x4. I want to trade in my ball-less 99 4x2 ext cab V-6 for it. I'm already aware of all the annoying little problems dakotas seem to have but is it true that the V-8 models have tranmission problems?? I've heard the V-8's tend to rip up trannys. Am i going to be trading my annoying little problems in for one big problem? Also, do dakotas have many 4 wheel drive issues?? That seems to be one thing i don't see much of on here.

I have had a 99 dakota V8 4X4 since it was new I have put 52,000 never had a problem with anything. For one the 99 has the 5.2 which is a wonderful motor, you have far less problems with that one then you ever will with the 4.7. As far as the transmission goes, I have never herd of the V8 killing any of them. For one they put the heavy duty transmission with the V8's different from the V6. The 4x4 system depends on which one you get I have the full time system and love it, never had a problem with it. I think that the full time is the best system for one, I have never had to put my truck in part-time or low range ever. No matter how stuck I am full-time works the best. Because full-time spins all four tires and the part-time and low range only spin the front right and back left. So those are my opions on that. If you have anymore questions about a 99 4X4 V8, let me have them. Good luck dude.

Phillip there is no way that you are spinning all four tires in awd unless you have LSD's or lockers in both diff's. All the AWD does is transfer power from the rear axle to the front when the rear starts to slip. It has no control whatsoever on the individual tires turning. Going from AWD to 4wd locks the transfer case so that power is going equally to the front and rear axles. 4 low is the same only it goes into a lower gear. Not saying the AWD is not good, it is very good in snow, rain, ice etc. But if you every get into anything really hairy you will want to put it into 4wd.

The only way that I know it spins all four tires is that I have my truck on video that when it almost got stuck, the part-time parts were only spinning 2 tires. It did not move the truck, I put it in Full-time and all four spun when I put the gas to it. I have used all the parts to the 4X4 systems and I have never had to put the truck into anything other than full-time. Full-time is different than AWD to, it does put power to the front and rear at all times, hence full-time. I am not trying to start a fight or anything, I am just saying my findings........maybe my truck is weird, LOL

Also, this truck i looked at has a large amount of scratches like it was used off road alot, rubbing against branches and such. I hope the beat on exterior doesn't mean a beat on engine. I think most of the scratches can be buffed out but i might stay away from this one.

No fight here. :-) What I am trying to under stand is how can both front tires be getting power. 1 yes but the only way for both would be if it had a LSD in the front diff and then steering would be very hard on pavement. Check ou the post on the off road board that MACE did about the Full time setup. Maybe there is something I am missing on understanding or we just arent getting our words across.. But yeah no fight here, dont mind discussing the issue but no arguing. Could be that you just have a really special truck!! Drive on!!

I know right, I mean I would not have believed it myself if I did not have it on tape. I do know at first I had a little trouble with the system, because the truck spins the rear tires easy in the rain I use full-time to help out. One day when it was raining I went to turn into a parking spot and one of the rear tires started to drag, like it was in part-time. Took it to Dodge and they had not worked on a full-time system on a dakota then before, first year they put it in the truck. So they said that they had to put some fluid in the transfer case to make it free floating so it would not bind up. I think that is what makes it help to spin four wheels is that the transfer case does not lock in just two wheels. I don't know!!! LOL Just another thought.
