Subject: Fix Rattling Overhead Console
IP: Logged

Message:
I finally got tired of listening to my overhead console rattle evertime I was on rough road or had the stereo cranked. Made for a good 1 hour project. If your interested, here's the rundown.

Remove 1 screw from the front of console, pull off and unplug light harness. Remove the garage door opener door, and then remove the door catch. Put 3 layers of "Scotch" tape on the top and bottom of the catch where it contacts the door's retaining slot (2 places on the outer edge of the catch). Remove the spring from the catch and put some 1/16 heatshrink tube on the 90 degree bends, thin wire insulation might work also. One done!

Remove the 6 Torx screws holding down the other fixtures and start with the sunglass door. Same procedure as the other door except that you also need to put some foam tape (without the backing removed) on the console frame under the hinge for this door. Two done!

The courtesy light lenses need some heatshrink tube on the switch contact arm, electrical tape might work, and a strip of foam tape on the center of the console frame underneath the lenses. The switches bound up right after I put the foam tape on, but after a couple of hours the foam tape compressed and they worked just fine. Three Done.

Pop the "Clip" apart and apply a thin bead of silicone to the areas where it makes plastic to plastic contact, a tooth pick makes applying the silicone easier. Snap the "Clip" back together and apply a thin bead of silicone to the area where the clip contacts with the console frame.

Place the, sunglass door, light assembly and "Clip" back into position and screw them down. Paper towels clean up the excess silicone from the clip just fine so don't use too much silicone or you will have a real mess to clean up. Also don't use automotive silicone unless you like orange, black or blue stuff all over your console, I used clear bathroom silicone.

Now that your masterpeice is completed, bang it on the kitchen table and hear the sweet sound of success, no rattles.

OOP's, I forgot to mention that you will need to trim the excess scotch tape from the door catches with a razor blade.
