Subject: Sludge on Oil cap and Filler plug

Message:
This may have been discussed on this site before but if not it may be interesting to some.
My vehicle - 2001 4x4 Dakota CC 4.7
While having my oil changed the other day the Mechanic informed me of allot of white colored sludge built up on the oil cap and filler plug. He said this is most likely caused by condensation build up on the filler spout and cap due to a design flaw. Said he has seen it often in Dodge trucks.
I called the dealer the next day and found out Dodge is aware of this and have designed a new oil cap and filler plug to prevent the sludge from building up. Just bought it from the dealer, 2 pieces, It cost 6.50 total.
I was surprised to hear that Dodge is aware of this but did not put out a recall on it? I guess they don't think it has the potential to cause problems. Of course the dealer told me 'Don't worry the sludge is not in the motor'
Good Luck

There is a TSB on it, you should have had it fixed for free.

TSB's do not indicate a "free fix" but indicate a way to fix a problem that has, until recently never been figured out, or never been complained about until a recent model year vehicle.

For those who have heard Marvin Zindler in the Houston area,

'SLIME IN THE ICE MACHINE'

My 01, 4.7, came with the silly baffle in the filler tube, I took it out! Just to be kind of renegade I guess.

I change all my own oil, using Mobil 1, and have never had any slime, foam, mile shake, etc.

Good luck!

Oh, well if there is a TSB on my truck I make the dealer fix it for free. They already have had to once for a junk wiper motor.

This can be very common on vehicles in the winter, barring any mechanicle problems this is usually caused by a engine not getting up to operating temp. long enough to burn off the condensation that can accumilate inside an engine.

Looking through all those posts, I saw 2 things that kinda hit me for an idea.

From 2 different posts...

"foam being cause by connecting rods dipping into the oil"

"I run a larger oil filter...do not have the problem."

Question...If we ran a larger oil filter and lowered the level of the oil in the pan just enough for the rods not to hit, would the foaming stop?

...gotta change the oil on the Durango this weekend, maybe I'll give it a shot.

The foam has nothing to do with the connecting rods " Dipping " into the oil, the foam is most likely condensation. A few years ago the wife had a job about three miles from home, 90 % of her driving was 5 min. in the morning and 5 min. in the afternoon her car always had condensation inside the fill cap. Now her job has been relocated across town 35 min ea. way in stop and go driving, now there is no foam.

BTW if your connecting rods were slapping in the oil, your oil pressure would be unstable because of the air that would be mixed in with the oil. Also when you drain your oil it would be one foaming mess, I doubt you have that happening.

This forum is great. I just noticed the sludge today for the first time. I always change my own oil - religiously every 3,000. I too run a larger filter - either a NAPA 1515 or a Fram PH8A, but the sludge is there due to the condensation on the filler cap. I'll give the dealer a try for a fix. Thanks everyone.

Just to post,,,My truck now has 88,000 miles on it. I live in TX and drive 35 miles to work one way every day. Not before this last Sunday have I ever noticed the sludge - ever. I opened her up this weekend and BAM - tons of sludge in the filler neck. Now it's not in the rest of the motor I believe - I also changed my cams this weekend, and the oil in there was clean as a whistle. I don't believe it to be how far you drive,,,,,but it has been pretty cool here lately,,,I think it's more temp. related.

Whoa there fella,

Andrew, Jim, etc....

There is NO easy fix!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you don't already have the 'baffle' in the filler neck, they simply put one in there.

TSB-what a crock on this one!

All it does is COVER UP most of the 'milk shake'.

It doesn't fix anything.

Probable fixes are, in no specail order:
1. driving farther each trip to heat the oil more.
2. using a 'true' synthetic'
3. midifying the filler neck- so it looks like something out of 'Lost in Space' (insulating it)
4. Changing the oil more frequently.
5. ?

#'s 1 and 2 are what works for me- no sludge-yet.

Remember, the baffle fixes nothing, THINK ABOUT WHAT IT DOES, you still get the sludge.

Happy sailing
